I've been having this uncomfortable sensation in my throat like a

tightness or swelling feeling. My lungs have been clear and no

coughing. I've had asthma in the past. Does anyone know if this

could be asthma related? Thanks for any opinions :-}

Hi! Sometimes, asthma medications can cause yeast to grow in your esophagus, causing a feeling of a stricture. Twice withn 6 years, I have been treated with oral anti-fungal pills for an extensive period of time due to this. Both times, I was referred to a gastroenterologist, who performed an upper endoscopy to diagnose it - I had no signs of thrush in the mouth. If the tightness consists, ask your doctor about this. Sounds more like some kind of throat infection to me.njmom1boy wrote: I've been having this uncomfortable sensation in my throat like a tightness or swelling feeling. Extensively tested - am allergic to just about everything alive (rocks are OK). I am very careful about what I eat but sometimes they sneak a walnut into the cookies.

it sounds more like a allergic reaction. does it itch too. I have an oral

allergy and when I eat raw fruits and veg my throat itches and closes up a

little. take a benadry just in case and call the doctor if it gets worse .

This is *exactly* what my son and I both had a few times since January.

At first we thought it was asthma-related and he took his Ventolin and I

my MaxAir, but it made absolutely no difference for either of us.

Neither of us had any other respiratory allergy symptoms and neither

have any food allergies.

My next step was to try Mucinex (guaifenesin, the main ingredient in

Robitussin DM) because when this happened in the past my doc would give

me Humibid (same med but at the time it was prescription only, now it's

OTC).

That did the trick. After the first dose the throat felt less swollen,

and by the second day I *was* coughing and bringing up mucus, too. So

much for having clear lungs, right? By the morning of the 4th day taking

the Mucinex I was back to normal. When the same thing happened again in

mid-March I didn't even futz around with the MaxAir but went straight to

the Mucinex and the next morning it was gone.

My son started his bout with it a few weeks after me in January. Since

he hates to take pills of any kind, even at age 24, he opted for the

Robitussin DM every 4 hours. By the second day his throat was back to

normal but the cough started. Since he's been asthmatic since age 5 his

cough lasted a few days longer than mine, and now thanks to Spring

allergies starting up, when the throat started in again about 2 weeks

ago he decided to just keep taking the Robitussin because he knows as

soon as he stops the cough will return.
