No, name-calling is not an acceptable practice, but from my perspective, I granted Gene more leeway rather than less because he was calling me a name rather than someone else. >Is it not a >moderate-able offense? Suze, is the only moderator on this. He knows too many cooks spoil the broth or The best chief is not the one who persuades people to his point of view. I consider myself to be a very mundane (in the sense of worldly, of having already seen and heard a lot) person, but I was quite shocked to read that word on the list. Really, that was the first time ever. I was about to react, but when I saw 's too mild and polite (in my opinion) response, I felt disencouraged to speak further. Yes, I agree that this creates a precedent, and I find it highly obnoxious (to use a term that is so dear to Gene) that he was given the chance of getting away with it. To say " I will stop posting, a***e " is purely evasive. Well, maybe he thinks he has a right to be evasive, but then why join a list at all? Since this seems to have bothered at least a few people, I'll explain myself slightly further. My commitment to and belief in the value of free speech is greater than my belief in the value of politeness, though I also place a fairly high premium on politeness. If he'd called anyone else a name, though, I would have bounced the message. Because it was directed at me, though, and because words like that have absolutely no effect on me, I let it through. I'm sorry if this disturbed anyone. Having an extremely high tolerance for so-called " harsh " language, it doesn't always occur to me that other people are more easily unsettled. That said, everyone should understand that the leeway I might extend some people when addressing me does not extend to their discourse with other people. Name-calling of list members is not allowed and will not be tolerated. -
