egg yolk for babies?

Hi All,

I gave Nourishing Traditions to my sister and recommended she read the

first foods for babies section at the end so she decided to start

giving her 6 month old an egg yolk every day. Today she went for a

visit to the pediatrician and told her what she was feeding her

daughter and brought in a copy of that section of Nourishing Traditions.

The doctor reacted pretty strongly to this information. She called the

information " bordering on malpractice " and said that it is very well

documented that eggs are highly allergenic and a very bad choice for

babies under a year old. She said that it's impossible to keep all the

egg white out and that anyhow the egg yolk is very hard to digest. She

had her own persoal experience w/ eggs and babies because her daughter

was being given eggs at her daycare and became allergic and couldn't

have eggs until she was 3 because of it.

Anyhow, I feel so frustrated because I wish I had more info to back me

up on this. Does anyone know anything about this issue? Someone

borrowed my Nourishing Traditions so I don't know if Sally has any

documentation on this. I'd like to ask my sister's doctor for her

" studies " on this issue, but she's not my doctor. Anyhow, my sister

will listen to her advice and go w/ the sweet potato and rice cereal

instead.

I wonder just how much pediatricians actually know about nutrition? I

wonder how many courses they take on this? My guess is next to

nothing, yet it is so frustrating that these are the people dictating

what most American children eat. Why should infant tylenol be

acceptable w/ it's corn syrup and red dyes, not to mention the

Acetaminophen? Why are vaccines w/ their preservatives not to mention

live/dead viruses acceptable? It's so frustrating!
