Hi GrannyMud,

Since I've been thinking about motives/intentions recently, I thought I'd ask

you:

What were your motives/intentions in sending your Bible passage to the group?

I'm noticing my motive right now in writing to you is to find out what kind

of response I get. So I'm doing it to get something. (An answer.)

Now that I see my motive, (that I'm doing it to get something), I can work

with my attachment to getting this *thing* so that if/when I *don't* get

something, I'm not depressed and heart broken.

I look forward to not hearing back about GrannyMuds intentions.

I am willing not to know her intentions.

Of course!

Now I'm free to ask my question and not be attached to the results.

This is powerful stuff...this business of noticing motives. : )

Love,

*mona

A friend has found mood Bell to be very helpful for her son. If I

get it right, they focus on providing pictures to associate with each

word, he has comprehension issues. They suggest picking a few words

each week and discussing them throughout the week with pictures to

reinforce, such as " helpful " you could have on a notecard & while

driving somewhere talk about what helpful means and examples, and then

maybe have a couple of pictures from a magazine of people doing

helpful things or something like that. Slow, but definitely a building

program.

Have you had her eyes tested? My daughter seems to have some tracking

issues. Also, something called Irlen Lenses has been helpful to some

people, we're still investigating that one. Finally, something

interesting always helps, like Allie reads all the colors of her

various Crayola products. Many of the words are used other ways, like

" sky blue " can be used to comprehend what the sky is, etc.

Have you tried label cards ? I taught my kids sight words this way I would get

some paper and write things like computer on them and then ask them to stick

them on the right item. It became more like a game and we went room by room and

occassionally added something new like a toy cat , rather than marking it as a

TOY we would mark it CAT and we eventually moved onto foods drinks etc

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi all!

I need some ideas to help my daughter with reading. She is a 10 year

old reading at a Kindergarten to First grade reading level. Her

attention span is short when it comes to reading. I have tried reading

with her and making her read some words before I'll continue the

story. She is also very smart and knows how to trick people into

reading for her, typical girl. :)LOL She also guesses at words

instead of reading them closely to see if the letters match the word

she is saying, we're working at that. I've thought of adding more

sight words to her list, though getting her to sit through that is

tough. Any more ideas would be wonderful. Thanks...... ..Lori

, that sounds like a great idea. It would also help my 3 and 6

year olds. I can see my house now covered in labels, the kids will

have too much fun. Thanks for the idea!....Lori

I think my boy learned to read primarily through sight words, but also

phonetically. One thing that worked well for us was a flip book that

had three sets of alphabets next to each other (spiral bound) so you

could flip the different cards to put words together. I'd put together

" bad " and sound it out with him then switch the last letter to " g " for

" bag " , then " bam " , " ban " , " bap " , " bar " , " bat " , etc. That way we had to

sound out the first letters then the last one each time. After he got

so he could read several different sets of same first letter words

( " ba " , " ca " , " sa " , etc) then I started switching the first letters each

time and leaving the last letters the same -- " cat " , " fat " , " sat " , etc.

Then I worked on changing the middle vowels. The key was to work in

sets and only change one letter at a time. Then he got repetition with

the two stable letters and only had to figure out one new one. We

worked slowly with lots of repetitions and didn't introduce new stuff

until the last stuff was pretty solid. The book was " I Can Spell "

published by " Kingfisher " . There is a 3 letter one and a 4 letter one.

Amazon carries them both. They have pictures to go along with the words

too. They worked well for my other boy, too.

The thing that really made my boy get interested in reading was when I

got Dr. Suess computer software that was read along. He loved looking

at the animations. Then he wanted me to read the book over and over.

Now he does better if I give him books about his current favorite topic

-- Indiana or Star Wars.

Good luck!

the mother of me shared for me I to learned to read before school age

but i to had many issues to reading, I to think I to learned whole

word because i to know could not read of small words such as no, on,

of, off, the, can and things of this the odd is I to remember this

challenge and for me, it was of words that looked alike for me that

were of too hard for me to distinguish the two apart and so could not

retain of them. this is why for me think memorized whole words and

not able to read parts or phoenitcally in the begin.

Another odd is I to still often see the word as a complete but

visually scan of it backwards and then read of it forward. so such as

CAN I to scan of it being NAC but read it can, it is of my eyes go to

the end of the letters to a word and then scan it backwards and then

can read it forward not sure why but still find self doing that. I

can also be to know of a word visually but when I to go to speak it ,

it comes out wrong or missing sounds or is of pronounced not

correctly but in my thinking it is of correct but when it comes out

it seems to distort or somethings of that.not sure I to have of words

to describe of it.

Even though I to use much words I to struggle much so to a variety of

formats and personal styles of in which the way words or used by

others so it causes huge gaps in what i to understand in compare to

what others think I to understand and that is of a huge illusion to

my ability level. I to be of smart in many areas of knowings but not

as smart as most, but not as stupid as i to appear to some who lack

knowing of me. I to just need more time to work out the crazy

condiments if you will to spice up the words in a expressed thinking,

yet other words come to me so rapidly and get processed at a higher

then one would expect of me fashions and so it can be of confusing to

most who are of among me to understand what i to really know and what

I to really be lacking, I to teach though to err on the side of me

not knowing as i to not get offended if one checks with me on my

comprehension because if I to lack I to might not be even aware was

of missing the whole of it.

Another things I to have to watch is certain letters actually appear

to be to jump out of the page for me so when reading text sometimes

get stuck stimming off the pattern as for example all the letter g's

will be of as notices to me as if they were of all highlighted in the

text and other patterns I to lack how to describe do the same so it

is of very hard for me to attend and comprehend of the words if my

brain is stuck seeing these patterns jumping off the page.

Another odd things is certain textures of pages in a book seem to

self highlight in a light golden color , not the line I to be reading

but one to two rows of lines under the line of text I to be of

reading. sometimes the letters of the text will seem to be

intertwined with black and dark green or blue letters but if I to ask

of one they say no the letters are of all black but my brain

processes several colors in the same text.

the biggest problems I to have with reading is knowing grammer rules

scuh as plurals, when to add es and and what words are already

plural, and to add future, past and present ending of words. and like

how to know when some words will change completely such as a mouse to

mice. things of this is of so very hard for me still. even my own

grammar has no real consistency because the words just flow from me

as they come out .

I to also remember learnign to read with the dick and jane series

much so at school.

About learning to spell it had ot be of repetative patterns to words

for me to retain of them and learn of them such as they had to have

of a common things about them such as the ch words, the double vowel

sounds of oa, oo, ou, and then the CVC such as cat, mat, bat....

these sorts of ways to teach of spelling were of the foundation of my

learning which was of so repetative and today they do not teach of

that style and so my daughter really struggles to this sort of

learning because of it not being teached in a way that she can learn.

when she was in the 4-5 grade ? she had of a resource teacher that

did teach of my missy this method and missy gained much so but had

now fallen back again because the last two years she has not had the

sort of learning a resouce teacher provided. Missy is of going into

8th grade this fall and her spelling is of still quite challenging

for her. she still struggles to read some too , she is of getting

better and can read a level 5 but I to lack what that means in the

over all of things.

My micheal who is of aspergers is of an advanced reader. he is of

advanced in social sciences and history too. he loves studying french

and is of quite good with it, but mike has always seemed to

understand langauge in an advanced way, he enjoys puns and idioms and

has of what is of called dry humor so he does like and enjoys to play

with words much so.

this family is of a strong diverse mixture of language skills with

advanced ability to challenged.

I have severe problems with staying focused when I read. I use a service called

RFB & D and get all of my books on tape. It takes a short time to develop an ear

for listening to audio books so choose things that are short and that she will

find interesting.

I to be of been thinking to buy some of them books on tape

but for me not sure if comprehend of the words readed by others

because of the flat effect of some readers. But I to love to have of

stores readed to me in the real of life and sometimes my therapist

wil read of me a story and that is of my favorite times to be with

him one to one. The other day he readed to me the story of a little

girl it was of called the lady bug girl it was of a kids book but it

was new and I to lived of it and for me like of to see of the visual

pictures to a story to help me gain insight to what the character

might look like and to gain insight to the actions of the character

and such. the lady bug girl was of a fun book.

I to love of books of all ages but in all true my favorite is of

childrens books or picture like books and then I to also like of

nonfiction books on topics of interest but they are often not as

comprehended as the visual kids books but for me can read of the non

fiction books and do for exposure to words and the exposure allows a

increase in vocabulary for me and so can use of them in many ways in

my writings but this does not mean I to truely comprehnd of it but

can rote memorize many of the phrases, sentences and such and so it

appears I to understand of it always and this is of not always true

for me. but with consistent exposure and different ways of saying the

same sorts of information on a topic from a variety of books does

eventually cause a visual image for me to finally have an internal

comprehension of it all.

Also to add when I to read often i to have of no clue to many of the

words or how to say them in my thinking so I to ahve to skip over

much words and try to gain insight to the ones I to be to know and

understand which then leaves me with huge gaps of my comprehension of

things i to read or hear. If my brain hears a words that is new or

not understood it gets stuck there and cant hear or pay attention

because my brain is much so stuck on the new word sound and trying to

repeat of the word so can then store of it but it gets stored with no

meaning. this is of in part not just a reading issues for me as it of

also a language issues for me. this is why i to sometimes wish were

of aspergers because many of them are very much smart to words and

such. But I to also be learning my own normal for me and my own sort

of intellegences is of just a part of me too. I to try hard to

remember that not everyone is of the same and that people are of very

differnet from one another and while can script and know of that sort

of facts told to me it is of still not a complete internal understand

for me yet. because I to think much of the time all people are of

like me and that is of hard at times to understand and know they are

not.
