Actually... since you mentioned it, here's a link for people who might

actually want a mask -- especially for long air travel. A nice little

company called " I Can Breathe " http://www.icanbreathe.com/ They make all

kinds of lightweight masks, some with little carbon filter replacements. And

yes masks do look silly... their eye masks are kind of kinky though...

My mother had problems breathing on her last plane trip, would this

mask possibly help someone with a problem like hers?

I don't know what kind of breathing problems your mother had. These carbon

filter masks are to keep things out of the nostrils. They're nice in that

they are easy to wear, not huge and they screen some amount of stuff but I'm

sorry I really don't know much more about them. Someone I used to be in

contact with had many chemical sensitivities. She was allergic to virtually

everything and she swore by these masks on trips. I saw one of them and it

looked about as nice as a mask could look. :-)

People wore masks all the time when I lived in Tokyo. It was not uncommon

and it was culturally quite acceptable. People wore them to keep their own

germs from infecting other people on crowded subways and so on -- one of the

things I really liked about Japanese culture.........
