Where are the 'best' WAPF chapters / communities?

My dh and I are in preliminary discussions about moving away from the

Bay Area. (We want to live somewhere where we can afford to have a

life!)

There are many considerations (economics, proximity to family and

friends, culture) but we're pretty open to finding the best community

for us.

One consideration is: I would love to be part of a strong and thriving

WAPF chapter. A chapter where people get together and make lasting

friendships. A chapter where there are a lot of young children (mine

is 18 months and another is on the way).

We probably don't want to go somewhere too rural (too different from

what we know). A town or city of 50,000 to 600,000 would be ideal;

although economically, a bigger city might serve us best.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Knoxville, TN has an active WAPF group and we have all developed great

friendships. I have three children under the age of 5.......

Daphne,

In Madison, Wisconsin our WAPF chapter is only 6 months old but going

strong. Quite a few families and local farmers are members. Madison is

a beautiful, intellectual, liberal city and you might feel right at

home after the Bay Area. We have the largest farmers' market in the

country downtown every Saturday, and numerous smaller farmers' markets

around town during the rest of the week. There are quite a few groups

that make weekly trips to local farms for raw milk. One of the great

thing about Madison is has the culture of a much larger city but a

" small-town " feel. Land values have definitely been going up here but

it's still far cheaper than any city on the coasts. In fact, it's

probably one of the best bargains in the country. Money Magazine rated

it number one for best cities to live in a few years back. Unless you

can't handle a couple of months per year of cold weather and snow, I'd

highly recommend you consider Madison. I grew up here and always like

to tell people about its wonders. :)
