Hi all,

My DH is very grumpy at the moment (for 2-3 weeks now), I

suspect SAD seasonal affective disorder. A couple of years ago he went

through this too. It is the shortest day today here in New Zealand. I

was wondering if anyone here has been able to " cure " this? I was

thinking of special lights, but not sure what to look for, or even if

I can get them here. Last year I got some " craft lights " that are

supposed to be closer to natural sunlight (so crafty people can match

colours etc at night). He didn't get it last year, not sure if it was

a fluke or not, will try them again if nothing else looks promising.

Is there anything nutritional that I can do?

The last couple of years I have had more problems with this as well. What

has helped me is to increase my Vit A and D, by CLO, during the winter. I also

have to be much more cautious with my diet; I have to stick much more closely to

my " good " foods, and avoid even occasional eating of foods which bother me more;

gluten, dairy and chocolate. If I eat much of these, I end up with more mood

swings and depression. Also, making sure I have more mental relaxation support,

and doing what relaxes me. I have to make mental " appointments " to relax, and

do what I enjoy, without getting caught up in life's busy-ness. The combination

of these things helps considerably, although it doesn't alleviate it completely.

I haven't experimented with the alternate indoor lighting, but I might try that

with our next winter here.

Large doses of Zinc supplements under the supervision of an ND sorted my SAD

out... cutting out gluten did it for my DH.

Hi Jewel, i used to have SAD really bad. what really helped: i got

the book the Diet Cure by Ross, there were 2 chapters that

addressed brain chemisty. however, her new book, the Mood Cure, i'm

sure has turned those 2 chapters in an entire book.

what really helps is taking the amino acids she prescribes, plus making

sure you get plenty of protein at each meal.

it really worked wonders for me.

best to you and your dh.

Hi Jewel,

I thought I was the only Kiwi on the list! Whereabouts are you? I'm in

Wellington.

The summers here have been so poor lately with not much sun, and it seems to

me that depression is much more common. I suspect a lot of it is serotonin

deficiency.

The lights may help with that, or as suggested, look for one of

Ross's books - The Mood Cure or The Diet Cure. 5HTP or St s Wort can be

very helpful. Plus, of course, enough protein and plenty of good fat.

I've got some NZ specific NN resources, if you want to email me offlist: deb

" at " frot.co.nz or through my website www.diet.net.nz

Cheers, Deb
