Kefir bacteria are very protective, and the kefir-milk is pre-digested and has been used (it is said, I haven't read it personally) for preemies in other countries. I did give it to my son when he was fairly young, and it stabilized him nicely. However, if you CAN nurse, I sure would urge you to do so, even if for only one or two feedings a day. The immune system of a baby is " trained " at about 5 months as to which foods are ok to eat and which are not, and the system is trained via substances in breast milk. Doing a little work now might make your baby a LOT less prone to allergies etc. later. And yeah, I know it's a pain. Heidi Jean

I actually have some organic turkey broth simmering now from Easter dinner. She seemed to digest the enfamil better today than the NT formula but then I realized I have not been putting enough water in it. (I thought it said 7/8 of a cup not 1 and 7/8ths) I am just judging this digestion by her bowel movements. I just searched all of PA and could not find a dairy close enough to get raw goats milk and I am still debating the cost of the new csa here in frederick/montgomery county MD. Don't know if we can afford it. And they don't offer goats milk... I would like to try something like chicken broth? for a few days to clear her system and then retry the NT formula again. ps.I can't read some emails as there is no message there when I open it up? LIVER-BASED FORMULA Makes about 36 ounces Our liver-based formula also mimics the nutrient profile of mother's milk. It is extremely important to include coconut oil in this formula as it is the only ingredient that provides the special medium-chain saturated fats found in mother's milk. As with the milk-based formula, all oils should be truly expeller-expressed. 3 3/4 cups homemade beef or chicken broth 2 ounces organic liver, cut into small pieces 5 tablespoons lactose* 1 teaspoon bifidobacterium infantis** 1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (See recipe for whey, below) 1 tablespoon coconut oil* 1 teaspoon cod liver oil or 1/2 teaspoon high-vitamin cod liver oil* 1 teaspoon unrefined sunflower oil* 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon acerola powder *Available from Radiant Life 888-593-8333 **Available from Natren 800-992-3323 Simmer liver gently in broth until the meat is cooked through. Liquefy using a handheld blender or in a food processor [steph here - a blender would be fine as well]. When the liver broth has cooled, stir in remaining ingredients. Store in a very clean glass or stainless steel container. To serve, stir formula well and pour 6 to 8 ounces in a very clean glass bottle. Attach a clean nipple and set in a pan of simmering water until formula is warm but not hot to the touch, shake well and feed to baby. (Never heat formula in a microwave oven!) Heidi's idea for the kefir is good, too, for the milk based formula. Do you have kefir grains? Steph
Guest guest
Heidi, I think it is your messages that I can't read for some reason... But I no longer have kefir grains. Well that is not exactly true. I had some a year ago and stopped feeding them and they have been sitting in the back of the fridge for at least a year. I guess they are dead? Steph, I am so dense. I looked at the meat based recipe in my NT and thought it meant it was for beef broth and never saw the chicken broth. But thank you for copying it for me again. Now I need to find organic liver if I am going to take that route. Our health food store does not sell meat. Today I had to go out so I just stuck with the enfamil. But she is still spitting that up an awful lot. But not a puucky smell and look like the other night. She was not spitting up breastmilk at all. She is not at all fussy And has been a great kid the past 2 enfamil days. Especially compared to the breastfeeding. I think I will read Adelle es book about raising healthy children and try to make a decision on what will work for us as fast as I can. I have to decide if I am going to do the cow share program or not. It is $40 a share and $22 a month for the milk. And this only gets you 1 gallon a week. I need 3 gallons a week. So you see my cost problem! Is this expensive or the norm? Thanks for the help! Heidi's idea for the kefir is good, too, for the milk based formula. Do you have kefir grains? You might want to just try them out. There have been stories of them lasting a LONG time. Even dehydrated. Try them with a fresh batch of milk every day (pasteurized: raw milk has too much competition when they are weak). If the grains are soft and pliable and a little gooey, they are likely fine. Sometimes they get a hard crust on the outside, then they take longer to come back. I do have grains, but I'm lousy at mailing anything and sometimes they don't make it in the mail either! As for why you can't read my messages, I dunno ... Heidi Jean
