Guest guest
I don't know what CLO is--my youngest is 8, so it has been awhile. But I do wonder, if babies have been getting by for many millenia on breast milk why the need to introduce something else? You should do what you want to do and what feels right for you, not what a lot of others are doing. This is a Traditional Foods group and I can't think of anything more traditional than pure mother's milk. CLO for babies Hi I am wondering when other moms on this list started to give their babies CLO. My 6 month old is exclusively breastfed and I don't plan on introducing solids for a while. I take CLO myself but don't know if I should be giving him any directly. I know there is a lot of talk about this on the WAPHB group but the majority of moms are giving their kids the raw milk formula and starting solids earlier than what I want to do. Any thoughts/suggestion s? TIA, h ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Guest guest
CLO is cod liver oil. I second this opinion, h. I think that the only concern would be if something is missing from YOUR diet. If you are taking it, the baby is reaping the benefits! No worries! Kathy
Guest guest
My wife takes very large doses of clo and bo until she is winding her breastfeeding down. i think she has found research that says 5-6,000 iu;s of vitamin D per day for the baby to get enough through the breast milk. when starting the little ones on clo/bo she gives them about 2000 iu's or more iu's vitamin d per day. Guest guest
Our doctor, who is a WAPF member, wanted us to wait until one year to introduce solids and didn't think she needed any supplements besides breast milk. I ended up letting Adah taste several different foods before she turned one, but nothing was a major source of calories yet. Unfortunately, she threw up egg yolks when she tried them at seven months. She now eats yolks but not the whites yet. We started giving her CLO around one year. She loves her daily dose of high vitamin cod liver oil. She asks for it by opening her mouth and saying " Ah " . She often grabs the spoon from me and licks it clean. Still being 99% breastfed at one year, her iron test came back slightly low, but not as low as you would expect. (I think hers was 11 and 12 is considered good.) She is now fifteen months and has had two viruses and one ear infection so far. I'm not sure what is normal. I found that after running a fever, she really wanted the CLO. I gave her extra and she drank it right up. Babies are so smart! Guest guest
Hi ! I agree with this. CLO is Cod Liver Oil, and it is a rich source of vitamins A, D, and omega 3 fats. But breastmilk is the perfect food, especially if mama eats a healthy diet. It is lacking in vitamin D, though, so breastfed babies need sunshine. Vitamin D can be stored in the body throughout the winter and therefore I don't believe CLO supplementation is always necessary. Babies have vitamin D stores in their bodies from their time in the womb for about their first year of life. Another note, CLO is not right for everybody--including me; it puts my fatty acid ratio out of balance and causes distress on my body. I have had this checked by my natural physician. I enjoy a lot of animal foods from pastured animals, and this provides me with all the omega 3's I need. I get D from sun, fish, and lard. My vitamin A levels are fine, but I should probably eat liver regularly anyway. Recently, Dr. Mercola has recommended supplementation with krill oil instead of CLO, due to the rapid oxidation of fish oil. What next? It can be difficult to do the right thing when the definition of the right thing often changes! > > I don't know what CLO is--my youngest is 8, so it has been awhile. Guest guest
Coming from someone who is always concerned about food allergies developing in people, I would strongly recommend you wait until 12 months or more since this is FISH. It is generally recommended to hold off on all fish until 1 year of age. He should be getting enough Omega-3s from your NT breastmilk, especially if you are doing CLO yourself. As far as Vit. D, I can't remember how well that is passed thru breastmilk, but I think before it becomes much of an issue (with his natural decrease in nursing due to age/solids) it will be Spring and he will have significantly more sun exposure.
