Guest guest
KJ, That is so interesting. My husband had the " cocktail " years years ago for " hyperthyroidism " and he has been on .1 mg of Synthroid forever since then. Just recently his TSH was over 7, so they upped his Synthroid to .112 mg per day. After all these years, I do not understand why the level went up. I have wondered also about the thyroid, and every time I mentioned it to our primary doctor, he " poo-pooed it " . He is also on B12 1,000 mcg for when his B12 level was " 64 " ...in 1999...we thought he had a B12 deficiency and that is when the tremor and " not being as sharp " became obvious. I still think this played a role, but his B12 level is normal as long as he takes the B12...when he stops, the level goes down. Guest guest
KJ, good to hear from you. My mother has never had any thyroid problems as far as I know. I was wondering as to whether there is a link between low blood pressure and heart problems and LBD as when people mention the meds their loved ones are on therre is usually some low blood pressure medication. Can I suggest you run a poll. The Caregiver's site gives you the ability to create a poll. Just click on the link below. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LBDcaregivers/editsurvey thyroid and LBD PLEASE RESPOND (LURKERS TOO) Dear everyone, How many of our loved ones are on thyroid medication - synthroid, etc? Guest guest
, I was just about to reply to you about the honey when your note came through. I didn't know about the poll feature. I will definitely check it out. Try the way my mother also has low blood pressure although it is just a tendency not clinically official. Thank you so much for the honey. I haven't had a chance to take it to my mom's yet as it just came. I want to research its beneficial properties to convince her caregivers to use it. Will you allow me to reimburse you for it? That way you can send off more of it to others. Send me an email with your mailing address please. It was wonderful to meet you in LaX. I have been so busy with Nurse Aid training and job hunting and researching my mom's drugs that I haven't had time to write the individual notes that I have wanted to send to each of you that I met there. And this week I start a temp job so things will get even busier. Again thanks so much for the honey, it is really sweet (ha-ha) of you to have sent it. Guest guest
Thanks Courage. For this info to go further we need to ask how many people participated in the poll? How many had BP problems? Is the ratio any different than the incidence of BP problems in the general geriatric population? Personally, I think BP problems are so common in elderly folks that it would be surprising if LBD folks didn't commonly have them. I am not certain thyroid problems are as common in the general population. But these are only my personal impressions. I just want to learn more. Its important for people to respond to the poll even if their answer is no. Otherwise we won't get a representative picture. Guest guest
Dear folks, In addition to setting up the poll question about LBD and thyroid problems, I also searched the archives. From all sources, the poll so far and the archives there are 21 separate cases of LBD and thyroid problems. Most are hypothyroid but a few are hyperthyroid and a few just say thyroid problems. Betty wrote in July: In two situations he explains that there can be a loss of dopamine leading to parkinsonian symptoms. Not because of damage to the substantia niagra, as would happen in typical PD, but to inability of the striatum to respond to the dopamine. " In hypothyroidism, the body and the brain have decreased amounts of thyroid hormone, and without sufficient thyroid hormone the dopamine receptors of the striatum cannot respond to dopamine. " In hypoparathyroidism, " the body doesn't make parathyroid hormone and without that hormone, some aspects of brain function can be changed. One of these is how the striatum responds to dopamine. " As you can see, these glandular systems are very important. I had a benign thyroid tumor removed in addition to the right half of my thyroid at age 23. It wasn't until I was 42 that I began taking medication for my underactive condition. My Mom and brother also have hypothyroidism. Never before did I realize how important thyroid function was to eventual health of certain brain structures until I read this. This explains a possible relationship to the motor symptoms but does not explain what Eve wrote in Oct 2001: " He was informed that there is a very high occurrence of hypothyroidism in some people with dementia " 8 people so far have responded with NO thyroid problems for their LBD LOs. Will keep you posted as the poll goes along. One things for sure. I am going to request more attention be paid to my mom's synthroid levels. Also does synthroid compensate for hypoparathyroidism as well as hypothyroidism? Betty? Russ? Geri? Guest guest
Dear Coyote: Oh! well, since I am here... This cought my eye, as a new " lurker " LOL. My dad had no thyroid problems, but his eyesight deteriorated a lot. He had 20/10 vision all his life before LBD. He also was extremely healthy and had a very good diet. No red meats, wine once in a while. He smoked as a young man, but not anymore for the last 50 years. The past few years he developed high cholesterol and blood pressure. Guest guest
Hi Simmel With my mother we had a similar experience, mother had a cataract done, 16 mnths ago, with a local, she reacted violently, moods, depression, hallac, dreams, amazing stories about my father being a drug runner, she saw furry animals, couldnt concerntrate, had periods when she thought she couldnt breath, was going to die, horrible and my father called the ambulance at least 3-4 times and mother was rushed off to hosiptal, nothing was ever found, she returned home and became even more demanding and insistant, she began to fidget and shake in her legs then after a great deal of medication and I felt wrong dx I talked to who is a friend of our family, who described his mothers symptoms, as a result mother was taken to s Dr and he dx LBD, she is now in a home and on med that has held her. I feel thougth that she is after several months of good, begining to slip again. Guest guest
Hello, my mother had Graves Disease (an overactive thyroid condition) in 1958. She received radioactive iodine to shrink her thyroid. Since that time she has been on Synthroid because of an underactive thyroid. She has LBD and is currently taking Synthroid (0.15 mg). By the way, one of my sisters had this condition, I had it, my husband had it and my son when he was 12 years old had this. We are all taking replacement Synthroid. Hope this helps, > Dear everyone, > > How many of our loved ones are on thyroid medication - synthroid, etc? Is > there any possibility there is a connection. Guest guest
KJ -- my dad's thyroid was checked at least once that I know of and it came back " normal " (yeah, right - what's 'normal' with the beast). Anyway, I just know my dad eats everything in the place and still loses weight. Sometimes I wonder if maybe the memory doesn't have something to do with gaining weight?? I mean if you know you should eat that huge piece of pizza because you're going to gain weight from it, you put it back in the box. But, if there's no reason you know of that you shouldn't eat that piece of pizza as well as every other piece in the box ..... just a silly thought. I would not be surprised if he does have a thyroid problem though. Joni > Dear everyone, > > How many of our loved ones are on thyroid medication - synthroid, etc?
