Congratulations! We'll have to exchange notes. I am getting nine

chicks from the neighbor across the road, as soon as we get a coop

built. We don't know the gender yet, but we'll work all that out soon.

They have to hang out with their flock until they get big enough for my

cats to think better of them as cat chow, know what I mean?

It's a whole lot colder where you are, . I know about northern

Indiana from residing there for a few years. I bet Heidi can offer some

help for you too.

All the best!

Congrats! It will be an adventure!

We got our batch ... 10 ducklings this year, which is a first for us,

and 10 pullets (Rhode Island Reds and Winadots). We splurged and FINALLY

got one of those metal feeding troughs, which I wish we'd done a long

time ago. Sheesh it sure is easier.

" Horse stall pellets " are really good for keeping the chicks, BTW. We have

them in a shed til they can take the cold, then we put them in a pen

til they are not " cat food " size. We chop up greens and eggs etc. until they

can pasture.

Already has been. I had a long-distance digital thermometer out

there. The night before, it was fine, but then I put the remote unit

in a plastic bag to keep the shit off, and that screwed up the

readings. So as the evening progressed, I saw the temps drop. I went

out to check several times, lowered the heat lamp, finally decided to

let go and let God. woke up to alleged brooder temp of 52 and

outside temp of about 8. My fiancee went out to the henhouse (since

she was leaving earlier) and told me that, far from being

chickcicles, they were happily wandering around and even seem to have

grown.

I got a kit from Stromberg with 2 little metal troughs with a twirly

in the top to keep them from stepping in it.

Oh, those are cool too, but I meant the COW feeding troughs,

which feed stores use to raise chicks in. We were just using bales

of hay to fence in part of the shed.

The big oval galvanized-metal things that are about 3 ft high? (what

TSC uses?) Those are for water, actually. Yeah, having one would be

muy cool, but I don't think I'd get one just for chicks.

Right, they are actually for water. I put off getting one for a long

time, but since we get chicks every year I decided to spring for one.

Good luck with your chicken venture! One day I will join you in the ranks of

livestock owner, lol.
