Xylitol - Safe or Not?

Anyone really KNOW the skinny on Xylitol?

I've just spent a little time on Onibasu looking up xylitol. It's

looks

long and I woke up with a migraine and don't want to spend hours

trying

to figure this out. I skimmed through the Nexus article:

http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/xylitol.html and it looks

pretty

promising.

Before I endorse this with my 73 year old (74 in Aug) Mom, I really

just

need the bottom line on this. She has tried Stevia to no avail. She

has been fighting candida for many years - she has Sarcoidosis and

was

on high dose Prednisone about 10 years ago. I mentioned Xylitol to

her

about a week ago and she was ready to buy some then.

I tend to be on the more cautious side, given that I was drawn in to

Nutrasweet and consumed tons of it for about 12 or more years - as

did my folks. I just don't want Xylitol to be the next nutrasweet -

the

deceptive wonder sweetener that is later found to be hazardous to our

health.

So, is it really as good for you as they say? Or is it all marketing

hype? I've read that you should only consume it if it's made from

birch. But what is the process from birch to consumption? If is

sounds too good to be true...

Thanks for your input,

Skeptically, but hopefully yours,

Rhonda

Are they having her take any antifungals for her sarcoidosis? Or is

she avoiding starch/sugar and emphasizing fresh foods and good,

antifungal fats like coconut oil and animal fat?

She hasn't seen a Sarco Dr in about 4 years now, as she's been in a

bit

of a remission. Sarco, like many diseases, has it's flareups and

periods of fatigue, which Mom lives with. She is *almost* as Doctor-

avoiding as I am LOL.

As for antifungals, she goes on a cleansing diet/supplements several

times a year. She *tries* to avoid starch/sugar and does well until

a holiday or relatives come to visit. As for coconut oil, she was

doing quite well on it, incorporating it into her diet. Then, I

don't know, she just kinda' lost interest. She was having some

gallbladder problems and blamed the animal fats, unfairly IMO. That

was last summer and Dad was bringing home half gallons of ice cream.

After that last gallbladder attack she stopped the ice cream. But she

just never has been convinced that healthy animal fats, butter, raw

cream and coconut oil won't set off her gallbladder. She'll do just

about anything to avoid going to the doctor/hospital - including

reducing or avoiding the healthy fats.

Sugar appears to be her weakness. Stevia doesn't cut it for her.

That's why I'm asking about Xylitol. She will be starting back on

kefir next week - after the 4th family get together. And I'm fairly

sure she'll doctor it up with sugar, unless I come up with a

healthier alternative.
