This article is named " Serf to Turf >No More " : The whole " lawn " culture is really amazing. I remember looking at old pictures of the White House when I was a kid, and seeing that big lawn, and thinking " so how did they mow that in the old days? " . Of course they didn't: MUCH later I figured out that the lawn was, of course, for the sheep. Every house/manor had a herd of sheep, goats, etc, as well as a kitchen garden and chickens/ducks and of course your horses and cows. Even the White House. Now we still keep the " lawn " and " garden " but both are ornamental and more often than not, toxic! Not just the sprays ... the plants people put in are toxic (Rhodies are a favorite around here0. Anyway, my lawn is tended by goats ... Heidi Jean
