Re: Appliance advice

Hi everyone,

I would like opinions on the following appliances (best brands and

models). I realise that Consumer Reports and Cooks Illustrated offer

reviews, but I value what you guys think a bit more!

1. Toaster ovens

2. Food Processors

3. Slow cookers

Thanks!

As far as toaster ovens go, I would suggest getting one large enough to reheat

leftovers.

I'm looking for a new food processor too, so I'd be interested in

recommendations on that.

Someone posted on another group I'm on that some of the crockery pots of the

slow cookers contain lead (Rival brand I think) that can leach into your food,

so you might want to contact the manufacterer of the brand you're considering to

check on this.

>1. Toaster ovens

There is a convection oven at Target that is new, I think, $49.

Most of the convection ones have been pricey, but when

I had one it was great! They cook fast. I'm asking for this

one for Christmas. It is a toaster oven. They also have one

that has radiant heat which would be fast. I cook mainly

out of my toaster oven, so getting a good one is nice ...

My crock pot is an ancient Rival, with a ceramic insert. I hear

the newer ones use nonstick, which I wouldn't like. It

works great, I've never had one that didn't work great.

Cuisinart all the way. Though they're not quite as good as they used to be

and Kitchenaid has gotten a lot better, Kitchenaid still has a very small

feed tube compared to Cuisinart's, and that's hugely important.

It does depend to a degree on what size processor you're looking

for. Cuisinart's Mini-Mate is _awesome_ except for one design flaw, very

highly recommended, but its Mini Prep chopper is terrible. Perhaps

Kitchenaid's chopper is better; I don't know. Once you get into full-sized

food processors, though, all the Cuisinart models that I know of are very good.

I have a four-or-so cup Kitchenaid food processor and the feed tube is

a little too small and I wish it was bigger overall. Imagine

shredding cabbage one quart at a time--meh!
