Took me 10 mos to reestablish when I opened my own vs hospital owned (left July 2004, opened Dec 2004, first Medicare payment came through October 2005!!

You will get paid ultimately, it's a pain.

Talk with your local congressman may help you??

I used my billing service and we had to do what you did, but it's not fast.

Fortunately, alot of my Medicare is through 3rd party who paid me.

I moved my practice Mar 1st. my billing co. failed to inform medicare of the change till April end. Medicare stopped all payments 4/7/07. Since then we have done all the necc forms, etc. but they still have not processed my applic. Every time I call them they say "applic is in process."

I can never get to speak to a supervisor, when I asked to who was in charge they said Congress.

I am very frustrated and ready to drop out of medicare. I have approx. $15,000 in checks outstanding.

Matt, Could you clarify if it took 10 months from application submission to first payment or was it longer? I intend to apply as soon as I close on my house (office will be in my house) even though I think my "grand opening" will be July 1st. Does that give me a good chance of getting paid rapidly? My practice will probably be 50-60% Medicare. (depends on how many follow me) Does there seem to be regional variance in length of time to complete the application process? sort of thing happened to me….didn’t get fixed until I wrote nasty

grams to both Senators and Congressional Representative.  It was Representative Ben Chandler (or

someone in his office anyway) that finally got them off their butts.  Be sure you mention about how losing you cuts

seniors access to care.  And even better,

get your patients to call and write on your behalf.  The AARP crowd has lots of time and they love

to muck-rake.   Give them some form

letters that you have drafted for them, let them juice it up a bit and make

sure they have the addresses to send to….You’ll be surprised at the

response you get.

I can understand your level of frustration. However, they did give you a hint: Congress. Your Congressman and/or Senator can sometimes unlock doors that no one else can. I would urge you to contact their office, give them your story and see what they can do. You have nothing to lose, and certainly no cost involved. If things do work out, get to know them, maybe kick in some funds to their campaign. I can tell you they never forget a contributor, and most of them see this is a service they should provide to their constituents. "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. Application pushed for Medicare to acknowledge I was not at old practice once I got letter from Medicare inviting me in -- pushed billing co to fight this one, but didn't find out about it until Aug 2005, then got paid retro by Oct 2005.

Not sure if billing co could have done any better, but definitely no action until I pushed them...I get paid more by commercial medicare providers (BCBS, Advantra) than by Medicare directly so I didn't have that much outstanding, but got a nice check for about $6K in october 2005.

Its not a billing companies responsibility to track a provider number for a doctor. It is the doctor's responsibility. You as a provider are solely responsible for the information on file and for everything that is billed under your provider number. As a healthy practice measure you should have a list of your provider numbers with the address(es) listed on your profile. You should also have a begin (contract date) and end (contract date) listed.

Medicare by law does not allow anyone other than the provider to change the information. They rarely allow anyone but a physician receive payment (see past law suits in Florida where Medicare B has sued both physicians and billing companies for the physician allowing the billing company to receive, deposit and process funds) as the billing company does not provide the service and the law states ONLY a provider can receive reimbursement and it must be for services that were rendered by that provider. Its a very gray area and you guys need to be careful when assuming a physician must rely solely on billing services to renew agreements and change profiles....it is not permissible by mandate.
