It would be so much simpler and efficient to have a flat consumption tax on items, just like sales taxes. In the UK the VAT is 17%, I think (but they have way more taxation than that too). And that may be too high for us, I don't know. But I do think it's a fairer plan in general. However, many interests would be out of work under such a simple taxation policy. I know, I know, some of you will argue taxes are evil. But keeping a mega bureaucracy afloat with my hard earned money is really not very nice and could be eliminated to the extent that I wouldn't have to pay as much.
