Cholesterol dilemma - need help!

Hi everyone,

After about one or so months of fatigue and moodiness, I decided to

take a blood test to check mainly for low blood iron. My doctor just

phoned with the results, and to my (and my mom's) surprise, my LDL was

at 157. Now I know that high cholesterol isn't necessarily a bad

thing, but considering my diet, I did not expect such a high value.

Because of this news my mom doesn't want me eating egg yolks or liver

any more and is also considering putting me on cholesterol-lowering

drugs if my doctor deems it necessary.

She thinks that I am being stupid for trusting the WAPF. She cannot

read any sort of research (in English) and believes everything the TV

or the newspaper says, so I won't be able to convince her that I am

okay. So what I'm asking for is help for lowering my LDL, whether it

be lifestyle- or diet-related. I am currently on Atkins, eating many

vegetables, meats, fats, fish, avocadoes, eggs, olive oil and coconut

oil, and butter. No fruit, nuts, or starches (yet). I do weights 4x a

week, moderate intensity. I don't do any aerobics but I do walk a bit

at school. I take cod liver oil, acidophilus, and calcium tablets

every day. I've only recently started drinking Pu-Erh tea, but it

hasn't had any effect on my wellbeing. I actually haven't felt better

in years, to be honest.

Please help! I don't want to be another cholesterol-myth victim :(

157 isn't so bad - what are your HDL & total figures? They're much more

meaningful.

My doctor didn't say because she was too preoccupied with the LDL

figure. I hope to recieve the results on paper soon, though, so I'll

get back to you on that.

Hi Nina,

When I first went on the SCDiet (lo carb version) my total cholesterol went to

347 from

124. My daughter is on Atkins, and told me to go read up on their " cholesterol "

posts.

People were posting on there that their LDL went way down, and their HDL went

way up

when they started including SALMON into their diets. I started eating canned

salmon, and

the next time I went in for blood work my LDL had dropped quite a bit.

HTH, and good luck to ya,

'

Hi Nina,

Can you take cod liver oil or fish oil? It's a good source of omega

3's that are (IIRC) associated with a healthy mental state.

Also, anytime you lose weight quickly, you might cause your thyroid

to be suppressed. You might start taking your temperature

(preferably with a glass thermometer) upon waking (before getting out

of bed), as well as other times during the day. If it's

significantly lower than 98.6 most of the time, then your thyroid

might need some support.

A low thyroid is associated with high cholesterol and fatigue and

moodiness.

How long have you been doing Atkins? Perhaps you should incorporate

some more healthy carbs into your diet. You're supposed to be able

to reach a level of carb intake that is optimal for you.

I hope you don't really have to quit eating egg yolks and liver!

P.S. What language can your mom read? Maybe we can cobble together

some material that she *could* read.

,

I'm already taking one teaspoon of CLO a day. Should I increase my intake?

My thyroid seems to be normalizing already, since I've been having

MUCH better moods and my energy has been higher than it's ever been in

two years.

I'm still in the first two weeks of OWL, so I'm eating about 30g of

carbs per day. My avocado-per-day habit should help somewhat, I expect.

My mom can read simplified Chinese and some traditional Chinese. It's

mostly the technical terms in English that might confuse or discourage

her from reading the papers.

Thanks for your help!
