Well, kibble is certainly cheaper, but if you factor in the costs of the

degenertive diseases that are apparently caused by kibble (diabetes,

arthritis, urinary blockage, etc.) then you can evenutually wind up paying

very big bucks to a vet. (Just getting teeth cleaned can add up over the

years.)

Sticking to just the cost of the food itself, I'm not sure how raw meat

compares to can food, but I would guess it's in the ballpark. Hugo's basic

food is beef heart and that costs just under $1/pound where I live. I buy

about 9 lbs at a time, ask for it to be cut up in stew-meat size, and bring

it home to put in quart-size Mason jars to freeze. He also gets trimmings

from the pastured-raw meat I eat, and a daily portion of turkey neck and a

teensy bit of steamed zucchini (or fresh grass). There's also the

occasional egg yolk, chicken liver, etc. for variety.

Some folks do a recipe of ground meats and veggies, but I think its better

for their teeth to tear up their food, esp. things like gizzards or bones,

and I have little patience with preparation/kitchen time. Also, if you mix

things up in a recipe, you may be masking some foods or supplements the cat

would never eat on its own. And a cat that is eating whole raw meats knows

exactly what is and isn't good for him to eat. (That is, it's not addictive

eating.) Also, I never feed supplements. Just as I never take them, as I

think over the long haul they inevitably do more harm than good.

Including a starter recipe/mix if that's what you'd like. They are also

great at helping transition an animal, or suggesting remedies for a sick one

The last time I calculated this, it cost me around 12 percent more than

feeding a premium commercial food.

However, I buy in large quantities from a raw-feeding co-op.

I consider the feeding of grain-based kibbles to carnivorous pets to be a

false economy. You might save on their food, but you pay at the vet.
