If you are getting services you are pleased with , don't move to Texas. It

is not the place to be no matter what part of the state. The waiver

programs are on an extremely long waitlist and you may never reach the top.

I would stay put if you are in the least bit happy and can stay there

in Austin Lake area

New, with questions

Hello!

I am the mother of a severely autistic girl, age 16, who is in a very

self-contained classroom setting. She can be very violent, mostly to self,

but sometimes to others. When she's doing okay she's wonderful and very

loving. I continue to try to find answers to her self-injury. Mostly I feel

it is a combination of things: pain, frustration, need to communicate. She

is mostly non-verbal.

I am writing because I am thinking of moving to Texas. Currently she is on a

Medicaid waiver in our state. She gets OT once a week with this, and the

school district is able to bill Medicaid for a lot of her schooling. Is this

the case in Texas?

I have been told that it could be a ten year wait for me to get her on a

Medicaid waiver in Texas, and though I don't use Medicaid a lot, they do

cover part of her medical costs. A lot of her medical costs are out of

pocket because I do homeopathy, her DAN doctor is actually in Texas, so

Medicaid won't pay any of his costs, etc. We pay a lot out of pocket for

respite care, too. We have a good college nearby and I hire college girls to

help take care of her. I will really miss that.

If I moved to Texas, it is likely it would be to the Temple area. Can anyone

tell me about schooling there, etc? I want to do this with eyes wide open

and know what I am getting into.

Thanks!.

Marie

I am not getting great services, but I do get SOME services. What I am trying

to understand is how the schools are; are there any worthwhile public school

districts and individual programs that are worth anything in the Temple area?

Thanks.

Welcome! I started a few months ago. If you go to the personal life media

website you can download all her earlier podcasts. If you want to save them

to your computer you actually need to right click (click with your right

mouse button) over them and select Save Target As and then you can save it

to your itunes folder or wherever you like.

The blog page is blank and has been for a while. It's very frustrating I

know but apparently they are working on it.

So Welcome, I hope it goes well for you. I used to listen to quite a few in

a row but I've now found that sometimes you need to just listen to one and

think about it and put it in to practice before moving on to the next one.

Thank you for this information, Jeanette! I hadn't thought to do the 'right

click' thing :)

I wasn't sure about the blog - sometimes I have weird internet problems that

prevent sites from loading properly, so I thought I'd check to see if others

were having the same problem. Hopefully, the blog will be up soon - I'd like to

check it out.

I'm currently listening to the podcasts like you used to - a bunch in a row. I

see the value in just working on one at a time, though - there are a few I've

heard so far that I've listened to over again, which I'm finding helpful.

Glad to meet you!
