ever? My son was a lot like this with just an ADHD diagnosis at ages 5 and 6.

The public school we had him in (for 3 months before we removed him) was, I

believe, building a case for some sort of behavior label - probably ED. The

accurate diagnosis is Asperger's/HFA although he does have problems with

hyperactivity and impulse control.

ADHD Change in Placement

I know this is a little off topic, and it's for someone whose child does not

have autism. The child is 6 years old and in a general education kindergarten

classroom. He's verrrrry smart. The child has had some behavior problems in

school. The behaviors are not destructive nor do they cause physical harm to

anyone, but they seem to be frequent.

The school implemented some punishment-based procedures, such as a level system,

time-outs and visits to the principal. The child has continued to have

challenging behaviors, and now the school wants to change his placement to an

alternative program. The district has not done an evaluation to determine if the

child is eligible for special education (or a 504 plan) as a child with

OHI/ADHD.

How can a district decide a child needs a more restrictive placement without

even doing an assessment? If the district does not have a diagnosis or determine

he is eligible for an IEP (or 504), can they unilaterally change his placement?

I told the parent to run and get a diagnosis from an independent evaluator and

push for him to have an IEP or 504 plan. At least that way he won't be excluded

from general education because of behaviors resulting solely from his

disability. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Geraldine
