Guest guest
Hi My son has moderate to severe autism and so I am not as familiar w/ asperger's. I got a call today from someone at my son's school saying that her friends 12 yr old son was just diagnosed w/ aspergers. He has been in the same district for his entire school career and was always labeled w/ " behavioral problems " and ADHD. The women recently took him to a new physician who has given him an ASD/Aspergers dianosis. I was wondering how many parents we have here whose child falls at this end of the spectrum and has anyone had a similar experience where their child was so old when he/she was finally diagnosed. Basically they have pushed him thru as 504 w/ no special ed services all these years. Can anyone share any experiences w/ this and how to get started on a good IEP this late in the game? I wanted to maybe give her some similar stories ( hopefully w/ a positive outcome) Also what systems, structured schedules, reinforcements etc have helped your child... Thanks April
Guest guest
My daughter with Asperger Syndrome was not formally diagnosed until she was almost 10 years old, and that was 9 ½ years ago. We had to go out-of-state at that time to even get an appropriate diagnosis. Up to that point, she had been diagnosed with a variety of things (I think I counted once and she had something like 15 different diagnoses before she got the correct one). I battled with my school district for a couple of years before they “got it” (including mediations and due process), but we did get her a good IEP and some good support services in her last year of elementary school. It was still important and still made a tremendous difference that “late in the game”. nna -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
