Guest guest
Hello all, I am new to the board and would appreciate any suggestions ,feedback on this.I live in California but there is a possibility that I may move to Texas(Austin area) My son receives SSI and Medi-Cal here and although I've contacted SSI and they say that it would simply just transfer his case to a local SSI office wherever we move to I hesitate to think it could be that smooth of a transistion.I was also told that CA pays a bit more in benefits but not sure what amount.Does anyone know how/where I would be able to find out how SSI is calculated in TX ? Here in CA we also have a service called In-home services which is through the dept of aging and they provide financial support to primary caregivers(parents) that care for their disabled child at home vs an institution. Here it is based on an hrly rate and they calculate the amount of time in each day that you perform certain " duties " for the care of your child that a child their age w/o a disability would be able to do without help(i.e. self care etc) dispensing meds, giving supplements,OT,travel to dr or therapies all of these things are calculated to determine #of hrs a day and for the month.Sorry this is so long but I've called a few places and they either didn't understand what I was trying to describe or refered me to another clueless individual.Does something like this exist in TX ? Here in CA you qualify if you have been approved for SSI. Thanks in advance Feel free to email me privately if you wish. Stacey
Guest guest
My son used to receive SSI and when we relocated from GA to CA it was a very simple process...I simply called the 800 number for social security and reported my new address and any changes to our income. That was it. It really was that simple. CA pays more in SSI because of the cost of living. the state supplements that base amount. in tx they do not. Guest guest
Stacey, Don't know about the whole SSI and Medi-Cal problem. I used to live in Austin and there is a wonderful treatment center there called Thoughtful House associated with CARD. I believe it is located on Bee Caves Rd. They also had funding assistance. It is worth checking out. http://www.thoughtfulhouse.com/ Hope the info is of some help. R.
