This reminds me... yesterday, I was volunteering at the school, and there

was a new student in the PPCD class. Not sure if he has autism or not, but

he definitely has behavior problems that stem from something more than being

a 3 year old, and he doesn't speak, but he uses some signs. Anyway, the PPCD

teacher has a new aide for this child, someone I had never seen before. The

aide came into the workroom to eat lunch and she starting talking with me

and she tells me that she's been CUTTING HAIR for the last 8 years and she

wanted a change in her life. She has teenage children, but other than that,

NO experience with young children, NO child development degree or college

courses, NO training prior to beginning work with this child on Monday... I

was SHOCKED! Makes me wonder how many others are out there like this. How

does the school get away with this?

I believe teachers are TAs are required by IDEA to have at least some sort of

special ed training. Does anyone know if aides are addressed?

In a nutshell - because parents let them. We are not keeping the pressure on

our elected officials, etc, to fully fund special education and it's programs to

allow for fair pay for the para-professionals and teachers. So basically the

good and qualified ones quit for better paying jobs and the schools are left to

hire what they can get.

Attend school board meetings that are public and voice those concerns, etc.

Those in Cy-Fair district should be at those asking how much was spent for that

Barry Center/Stadium that is absolutely huge and for the most part empty.

Ahhh... don't get me started...

I couldn't agree with you more Guppy. I was so infuriated after

hearing that f-- s-- Gene Lenz say that it's only a handful of parents who

aren't happy with special ed services and that more than 511,000 plus kids in

Texas are receiving the services they need, apparently he hasn't read the

report,

which says Texas is dead last in providing services to the disabled. Louis

Geigerman's statement was weighty and Greg Groogan did a great job reporting

the story, but with editing the information goes by so fast--I'll have to go

to the web site and watch the story again. Thank you for posting the link.

Groogan, thank you for posting the time the story was going to air

last night, your husband did a great job of getting the problem aired on the

news. After I watched the piece, it clicked who you are--you used to be a

reporter on Fox 26 as well. I remembered the interview you did with the

director

of CPS a few years ago when a little girl was abandoned in a Randall's

grocery store in Sugar Land after she was caught shop-lifting (forced to by her

family) and left alone in foster care. CReece

I would love to write Greg Googan and thank him for his outstanding reporting.

His email

address was cut off from previous email. Does anyone have his complete address?

I was surprised to see Gene interviewed but now we all see why there is no sense

of

urgency for change in our education system...

I'm new to the group but thought I'd comment on this.

I live in California and in my area(all are different)an aide or 1:1 is not

required to have any early childhood education credits or any experience or

training .They simply pass a gen ed test(math ,english etc)and a background

check. When my son was in school his aide was chosen by me ,and she was trained

and just happened to have experience in DIR/Floortime (trained by a certfied

provider)and was working with a few other families as well.Yes,she was a God

send!

She was with us for 3yrs.There was also a fantastic t.a. that was pursuing a

career in special ed,her brother went to school there and she approached the

teacher of the spec ed class to be a volunteer. The following year she came back

as a t.a. and she has gone on to complete college so she can continue her

passion as a spec ed teacher. So,in some cases it can be a good thing. The thing

that matters most IMO is where the persons heart is.

Oh, but Liz, if everyone is so happy in the public system, Gene should have

no objection to special needs scholarships, since obviously NO ONE would use

them. Let's see where he stands on that issue. Maybe we should take a clip

of that report to Austin when the debate starts heating up.
