I need advice-fairly new to site

I have read with great interest for several months. My 23 year old

son is borderline high functioning AU/ADHD. He's always been a

puzzle, sometimes almost " normal " and then slips into a semi fog at

times. He's just graduated from college, but low job and social

skills. I took him to a DAN dr in our area (Plano), the only one

that sees older patients. He knew nothing about MB12 nasal spray and

little else about most of the things that I had read about on this

site. He ran blood tests that showed that magnesium was just a bit

low, candida albicans was a bit high, two brain hormones were a bit

low--epinephrine-urine and norephinephrine-urine, and on a gluten

study, the antigliadin Abs, IgA was just a bit high.

Since nothing was extremely out of normal, he wanted to do more

studies, but because of extreme costs (no insurance), I requested an

alternative. He started him on Nystatin 500,000 units 2 pills 4

times a day, magnesium citrate suppliment, a probiotic suppliment,

and MB12 nasal spray, 2mg, twice a day. He had to research the spray

to even know what to prescribe. He did not want to prescribe Valtrex

or anything like that at this time.

I know that there are other suppliments and things that I need to be

doing, but am at a loss on the combination and how to coordinate.

From the anti viruls to the patches to the epsom salts rubs, it all

sounds interesting, but I'm just overwhelmed. The DAN dr is not real

helpful and I really need some good advice. With this mix of stuff,

what else would you all recommend that I can get over the counter to

help my son stay off of the autism edge that he has always been on.

I know that all of you have been in the trenches and your advice is

really the best. You can either respond on this site or to

pwisnew@... Thanks so much!

That DAN sounds a bit useless, frankly, and already in over his

head...Valtrex is not new or cutting edge - please read McCandless'

book Children With Starving Brains...there is a part of it re

antivirals and her use of Valtrex with a teen girl who sounds so much

like your son...the brain fog and underachievement and puzzling

qualities...had a huge reaction-positively- to antiviral therapy. I

would take that into your docotr or I would find a way to phone

conference with Sr West in Santa and ask her opionion and for

Rxs from her to do a trial of anti viral therapy. If your insurance

will cover Dr Goldberg in La, he is also a good bet for an

older child with puzzling issues. If you do decide to do a drug

trial, make sure he is on a very low carb and starch diet like the

SCD...or you could try the SCD first to eliminate the possibility

that this is really related to food intolerances....mine made me very

spacy, but not non functional, so they were never diagnosed....I just

improved considerably on the SCD...and realized that I was far more

affected by foods than I ever thought...esp dairy, wheat/gluten,

sugars and complex carbs and starches...the fog lifted and my own

tendancy to zone out and daydream diminished significantly...but that

is just me. The college diet may have thrown his gut flora out of

whack bc " a little elevated " may be " alot " elevated depending on

which dr you ask....Good luck. Diane

you need a new DAN it doesn't sound like he is much of quality if he doesn't know how to suppliments. what tests did he run? most DANs should be able to do any age. our DAN is working with my best friend who is aspie who is 31 and yet recovered my 6 year old. age shouldn't matter other then on dosing for weight. testing would be the same

Recovering from Autism is a marathon NOT a sprint, but FULLY possible! Read more about it on my Blogs athttp://www.myspace.com/christelking

You didn't mention zinc--that's a biggie to add (they need it to

metabolize metals from the gut); also digestive enzymes with each

meal (read Defelice's book, Autism and Enzymes); if you suspect

a virus, you can also get that out with Virastop (see

enzymestuff.com) instead of Valatrex; also fish oil (Nordic Naturals

or OmegaBright at high doses) usually show results.
