[PROVE note: No big surprise here - the vast majority of parents aren't biting

at the flu vaccine. You would think the CDC would take a hint.]

Uptake of Pediatric Flu Vaccination Low in First Two Seasons

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Sept 14 - Despite encouragement by the Advisory

Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) in 2002 for children aged 6 to 23

months to receive annual influenza vaccination, few did so, according to a

report in the September issue of Pediatrics.

Dr. Tammy A. Santibanez and colleagues from Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia examined influenza vaccination coverage for the

2002-2003 and 2003-2004 influenza seasons among children 6 to 23 months old.

Only 7.4% of children in 2002-2003 and 17.5% of children in 2003-2004 received

at least one dose of influenza vaccine, the authors report. Even fewer (4.4% and

8.4%, respectively) were fully vaccinated.

There were significant demographic differences in vaccine uptake. Hispanic and

non-Hispanic black children were less likely than white and Asian children to be

immunized, the results indicate, as were children in households with lower

income levels.

Beginning with the 2004-2005 influenza season, the ACIP strengthened its

encouragement to a recommendation for this age group to have annual influenza

vaccination, the authors note.

" Substantial work remains to fully and equitably implement this new

recommendation, " Dr. Santibanez and colleagues conclude, and to " ensure

vaccination with two doses for previously unvaccinated children. "
