Guest guest
I have an 18 month old too and although she breastfeeds quite a lot she also eats a ton too. Is your daughter not eating enough? Although my dd has no allergies i'm aware of, she doesn't care much for dairy and eggs and i try to avoid wheat. She eats lots of meat and loves it. I either chew it for her or find stuff easy to chew, such as buffalo hot dogs (from The Buffalo Guys). I also give her veal sausages from a local German deli that uses above average meats. You could make your own veal sausages -- my kids love veal. Last night she went wild for some mild cod and snapper. She also loves my homemade pickles and before that ate lots of sauerkraut. My 4 y.o. loves the cinnamom/raisin mochi by Grainassance that you cook (it puffs up) and now my 18 m.o. likes those too. She also eats blueberries by the cupfuls (i buy them frozen and thaw) and will lunge for strawberries. She is not eating veggies at the moment so just lots of berries and apples. Oh yeah, ground beef spiced up (like taco seasoning) is well liked. I would really try and get some protein and fat into her. Both my kids love sausages. I wish my 18 mo liked CLO like yours. She spits it out. This is a tough age to feed bc they have specific desires and no way to communicate them. It's curious your milk is drying up. Are you sure? It shouldn't be. Are you eating enough? Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestions, Elaine. I have been having a tough time getting her to eat enough. For awhile, we had problems with GERD, but we got that solved. To get her to eat, I finally remembered a trick that worked with my first (Zita is no. 5). I sit her in front of the tv and sit next to her with a bowl of food and spoon feed her. If it's something she remotely likes, she'll eat the whole thing. When I feed her any other way she refuses to eat. She's eating pretty substantially. The foods I give her are high protein and high fat. I think the problem is that at this age they still need to be getting a lot of calories in liquid form, i.e., milk. My milk supply is definitely dropping and has been for several months. I'm eating a ton of food - good fats (ala Weston Price), protein, carbs (in the form of brown rice), nuts, fruits, veggies, fermented veggies and drinks. I've got curves I never had before! It's pretty easy to tell when you don't have enough milk. The baby wants to nurse but gets upset because nothing's coming out. I'm not sure what's causing the milk supply problems. I've got some kind of mystery illness and I can't completely figure out the problem. I figured out my food allergies and removed those foods, so that's helped a lot. I know what triggers migraines and avoid those things - that helped. I eat all the time to avoid hypoglycemia. I don't know, but at this point I may just be dealing with detox reaction now that I am consistently eating a healthy diet. I've been trying to make up in solid food what Zita's not getting from my breastmilk. I'm beginning to think this is a losing battle. I really think I need to try to find a good milk substitute. That can impact milk supply. > I've been trying to make up in solid food what Zita's not getting > from my breastmilk. I'm beginning to think this is a losing > battle. I really think I need to try to find a good milk substitute. My nursling is 19 mos and eats just about everything that we eat. She likes the meatballs that I make the olders, drinks coconut milk kefir with them, and so gets lots of protein and fats. Avocado, fi, is a high fat fruit. You mentioned having your daughter off of wheat, but does she still have grains like spelt, kamut, triticale, rye, or barley? These grains have gluten as wheat does. If she is gluten intolerant, beyond just being allergic to wheat, she could still be experiencing gut damage from continued consumption. A failure to thrive child immediately triggers my " gluten radar, " so I just thought I'd throw that out as food for thought. I won't suggest goat's milk, since so many people I know IRL and cyberly demonstrate an inability to tolerate cow's milk and then go on to react to goat's milk as well. Happened to us, unfortunately. But whatever you do, *please* don't look to commercial soy milk as a replacement milk. BTDT and we wound up with leaky gut syndrome and a long list of reactive foods because of it. You *don't* want to be here....trust me! Hope this helps! --s
