Guest guest
Now that I know how incredible helpful this board is (I posted on BFL vs. Atkins), I've got another question. My local YMCA has both free weights and a great CYBEX room. I've mastered the Cybex, but not free weights. Is there a difference between the two in terms of BFL and the results I should expect? thanks, deb
Guest guest
Without a doubt, free weights are light-years better than machines. Machines are great for a total rookie, because the proper range of motion is built right into the machine. The advantage that free weights offers is that they recruit auxiliary muscles to coordinate and balance through the entire range of motion. This not only builds better, more well-rounded muscularity in the specific muscle group you are working, but it also helps with other areas of fitness like balance, coordination and explosive power. Those tiny supporting (or " auxiliary " ) muscles help you balance for better calf raises using a barbell instead of standing calf machine. They help you stabilize during free weight squats and lunges. They help with lateral movements during sports like skiing, basketball and rollerblading. I really can't say enough about the benefits of free weights over machines. That said, keep in mind that if you are a beginner, the machines are very valuable for showing correct form and range of motion. Also, for certain exercises machines are great, especially to mix things up if you are bored. I use only free weights, I never use the machines, but that's just me. I'm only 5'2 " and most of the machines don't fit my frame - they are mostly designed with men in mind.
