'Suspicious' powder found at 4 U.S. sites

Published: June 14, 2010 at 8:58 PM

SEATTLE, June 14 (UPI) -- The FBI said Monday it was investigating the discovery

of envelopes containing white powder sent to at least four federal buildings in

the Northwest.

Mailroom workers at all four buildings -- the U.S. courthouse in Seattle, the

U.S. Attorney's Office in Boise, Idaho, the FBI building in Spokane, Wash., and

an IRS office in Bellevue, Wash. -- opened envelopes containing the suspicious

powder Monday, The Seattle Times reported.

Investigators concluded the powder was some sort of bleach compound, the

newspaper said.

A mailroom at the courthouse in Seattle was quarantined but there was no

disruption to the court schedule, the report said.

A worker at the IRS office in Bellevue was the only person to have direct

exposure to the powder, police said. She dropped the envelope and ran after

opening it, and then was taken with a co-worker for observation at a hospital.

Neither seemed to show any symptoms, police said.

Special Agent Frederick Gutt of the FBI Seattle field office said there may have

been other mailings in the Northwest that are " presumably related, " the

newspaper said.
