Guest guest
I am getting it for my daughter, but you also have to meet the income guidelines which I BARELY met but I am about to lose mybenefits because I will be FINALLY getting child support. Another thing I didnt even know is you automatically recieve medicaid if you get the SSI for your child. You can apply for SSI online on behalf of your child. i actually got turned down the first time, tried again 6 months later and they approved her. > > Hello listmates: > > I've heard differing information from various parents regarding the > eligibility of kids with autism for Social Security Disability > benefits. > > I would rather rely on the sage wisdom of my " autism cronies " than to > dig into the research myself (lazy? Guest guest
Forgot to add I think the maximum benfits you can get is around $600.00 per month. i only get around $100.00. But its something. But even if you only qualify for 1 dollar you get medicaid which may help with some bills, but I dont even use her medicaid because I have private insurance. > > Hello listmates: > > I've heard differing information from various parents regarding the > eligibility of kids with autism for Social Security Disability > benefits. > > I would rather rely on the sage wisdom of my " autism cronies " than to > dig into the research myself (lazy? Guest guest
They count " earned " income. When my husband was on workmen's comp, our SSI checks were $9.70. I called them about it, cause it absolutely did not make ANY sense to me. I was like, " He's getting 20% less pay per week, and SSI goes from $470 to $9.70? That's not worth the stamp to mail the check. " It's a hassle, we have to mail check stubs every month, and every month the amount changes based on income, but the medicaid has been the biggest blessing, and that's what makes it worth it to me. Guest guest
Well its hard to give an exact amount or cuttoff or whatever. I have a 5 year old autistic boy who is nonverbal. We are extremely blessed and were approved for SSI the first time we applied. they look at the severity, your family income and how many dependants you have and what you have in assets. In most states, texas included you automaticly receive medicaid if you get ssi. Even if you have private insurance this can be a bllessing because medicaid will covers things your private insurance dosent like co---pays. --------------------------------- The fish are biting. Guest guest
Also don't forget to take any and all money out of your autistic child's name. We were told that even his college savings would count as income for him. We moved all the separate accounts into a family trust. He cannot apply for SSI based on his income until he's 18 I think but if we were to both die I also did not want any insurance money etc to show in his name. Guest guest
Will Medicaid cover copays for providers that are not Medicaid providers? Guest guest
Im not sure if you know....but if your child has Medicaid and you have private insurance you might also qualify for the HIPP Program which will reimburse you monthly for the cost of your private health insurance. You can apply quickly and easily over the phone 1-. And I had a question...why arent you using the Medicaid? Your private insurance pays first and then Medicaid picks up the rest. For my son, I never have to pay the copays for the private insurance because medicaid pays them. ivy Cintron wrote: Forgot to add I think the maximum benfits you can get is around $600.00 per month. i only get around $100.00. Guest guest
Does anyone know off the top of their heads what the income limit is? And do they consider liabilities, or is it strictly income? Guest guest
I heard that. I lost the SSI on my son when I married my husband 10 years ago. He now makes around 26.00 an hour but when he got on SS disability this past year because he was unable to work we just knew we would be able to get SSI on my son again....NOT!!!!! We now have an income of $26 an hour replaced with $1860 a month but we still make too much money for my son to qualify. Now watch my eyes roll. But get this...... When I first married my husband he was raising his Down Syndrome grandson and the grandson didn't lose the SSI because my husband was his grand dad but my son did because my husband was his step dad. The grandparent thing puts a whole new light on it. Is that fair or what???? Guest guest
I can tell you that when I received SSI for Nolan my income for a family of two could not exceed $2,000 gross per month. This was sometimes difficult to do when I worked temp and received weekly paychecks - some months have 5 weeks which threw me over 2,000, some weeks I had overtime but some weeks had holidays that I didn't get paid for. I too had to provide paystubs. I usually received $25.00 or so each month (the max I think was $500.00 or so). I did not include Child Support since it came directly from dad not through the AG's office and was not reliable. When I found a full-time job grossing just over the limit, I left a voice mail for my local SSI rep and suddenly I began receiving full checks. I left another voice mail explaining I didn't think that I shouldn receive the checks and continued to receive them with no return call. At first I just tucked the checks into Nolan's savings account since at this point I didn't 'need' the money to live. Then, I just held them. A year later I received a letter stating I owed Social Security well over $3,000.00. Good thing I held some of them ! ! Although you do automatically receive Medicaid if you have SSI, you must continue to have your child re-evaluated (every 3, 6, 9, 12 + months depending on the medical issue) by the doctor they choose for your child to see (not to be confused with your regular physician) on the day they choose your child to see, and you must provide the information they request when they request it, and even if you provide information to them you may still be responsible for their errors. Also, if you have Medicaid, it is illegal for a medical provider (doctor, hospital, etc.) to send you a bill and it is also illegal for you to pay that bill. That is the other very fun thing to deal with. If the doctor's office doesn't handle the billing correctly and submit claims first to primary and/or secondary insurance when Medicaid is secondary and / or terciary, then Medicaid will refuse claims and they send bills to you. Medicaid does pick up all co-pays, deductables, pharmacy, generally all out of pocket which is very helpful. If you do not absolutely have to have the addition financial assistance, don't bother. The time you spend keeping up with it can sometimes cost you in the end. Perhaps too much info. Guest guest
Ooh I can't think of the name of the program, but I'm sure someone else on this list will know. There is a program that will pay copays after you have filed with your private insurance. You have to qualify for Medicaid in order to join this other program, though. It's so frustrating. Guest guest
We just lost my son's SSI and we are fighting to get it back--my husband worked overtime and it was too much. My husband also just got a raise that is 57 cents too much, so we are trying to give the raise back--his additional $98.72 a month is costing us $89 in SSI, over $500 in Medicaid for co-pays (daily rehab center for OT) and $356 in special formula (my 27 month old is liquid only due to oral aversion) on WIC (yes if you are under 5 on Medicaid you get WIC as well) In short, for a family of 3, $17.31 is the absolute tip top of the income you can earn--my hubby is now at 17.89. > > Also don't forget to take any and all money out of your autistic child's > > name.
