Guest guest
Courage, My mom was prescribed Ambien for sleeping about 5 years ago, when needed. They have never taken her off of it. Whenever we go to the DRs, I always give them a list of meds that she is currently taking. They have never said to not give it to her if needed, although she has not needed it since she has been on the Seroquel the other one for her tremors. Beth L. > Hi All, > > I've just made an observation that none of our LO's are prescribed sleeping pills - probably a good thing but am just wondering out loud if this would be an option for our LO's who are combative or anxiety ridden - a smaller dose just to calm them down? Mom still has terrible anxiety/panic/BP spikes and no matter what we do we can't seem to help her. > > Russ, Geri - what are your feelings on this? > Courage > Please follow this link to learn more about Lewy Body Dementia > http://www.lewybodydisease.org > > >
Guest guest
Thanks Beth for getting back to me on this. How was your mom when she took the sleeping pills once LBD was dx? Did you find she was more sleepy/more confused once she starting taking all the other meds? Has your mother ever had severe anxiety? Guest guest
Hi Beth and Courage, Ambien worked well for me personally (good sound sleep without a drugged feeling in the morning). So I thought about suggesting it here, but then read the following. Maybe Russ and/or Geri have had experience with it and could interpret whether or not it might pose a problem for LBD? I know benzodiazepines have been a problem for some LBD people. Maybe it would depend on how " closely related " Ambien is to benzos? http://www.med.miami.edu/patients/glossary/art.asp?articlekey=690 DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Zolpidem belongs to a class of medicines that effects the central nervous system, called sedative hypnotics. Zolpidem is closely related to a family of drugs called benzodiazepines. Good luck in finding something that works. Guest guest
Courage, Yes, Mom has had anxiety. It was dx with the severe depression quite a few years ago. The sleeping pills didn't do much good when the symptoms of LBD begin to show. She would insist on taking one at night, but then she would be up all night(quite aggitated, I might add). Of course, as I have stated before, she has not been active in " life " for sometime now, so exercize has not been on her agenda. Basically, since my brother passed away, in '95. Not sure if this helps. Guest guest
Sorry, Courage, I forgot to mention that , yes, she was more confused. Guest guest
Thanks for this info Peggy. I'm going to look around the net to see what else I can did up. Funny how I haven't read too much about sleeping pills and those with dementia. Guest guest
Thanks Beth for this info. I'm trying to think of anything that can help mom and I thought that perhaps sleeping pills may help to take the anxiety way for good but it sounds like they do more harm then good...going to stay away from them. Mom was so quiet again today.....I think the Seroquel has started to kick in (her only new med for a while other then the BP pills) and she no longer talks at a manic pace. Has anyone else noticed this when their LO took seroquel or am I making a connection that isn't there? Guest guest
After about 5 weeks of taking a sleeping pill I became extremely weary. I went to the doctor who said that it is probably from the sleep aid. I stopped the sleep aid - immediaely wnt back to my previous normal sleepless state - but was much less weary (after a few weeks off the med). I take one occasionally now - when I just have to get a decent nights sleep. Note: I never have a problem falling asleep - it is STAYING asleep that is a problem. I awake in the middle of the night feeling fully alert. Very bothersome. It wouldn't be so bad if I lived alone. But I have a family so I have to be relatively quiet. hugs, cindy lee
