Emerging Into

Young Adulthood With Autism:

Community Responses to Urgent Needs

Third Annual UJA-Federation of New York Autism Symposium

Organized in Collaboration With The Hilibrand Foundation

Thursday, April 22, 2010

8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

UJA-Federation of New York

Experts

report that the current prevalence of autism spectrum disorders are at

least 1 in 100, and a large portion of the diagnosed population is rapidly

approaching young adulthood. How can parents, professionals, and communal

organizations prepare for the needs of these individuals as they enter the

adult phase of their lives? Through presentations by renowned professionals

in the field, this symposium will examine the impact of emerging into young

adulthood with autism.

In

the morning, symposium attendees will learn about rising prevalence rates

and how this affects planning and service delivery for the young-adult

population. Our keynote address, The Changing Face of Autism: Emerging

Challenges and Opportunities in Working With Young Adults,

by Dr. Fred Volkmar, director of the Yale Child

Study Center,

will guide us through the practicalities of entering into young adulthood

for an individual with autism. Our morning session will conclude with a

presentation on healthy relationships and sexuality.

The

afternoon sessions will be devoted to specific issues facing young adults,

such as employment, housing, and building personal relationships. Through

presentations led by professionals from Walgreens and the Disability

Opportunity Fund, we will explore and discuss innovative and replicable

ways to create vocational and housing opportunities.

And

new this year, we’re bringing this symposium to a national audience as a

webinar by connecting with other Jewish federations and agencies around the

nation.
