Guest guest
Hi Everyone, My name is , and my family is moving to the Atlanta area from Michigan. I have a 5-year-old son who has special needs (autism, global apraxia) and who needs a lot of support. I would like to pick where to live based on where he would get the best services/kindergarten experience, which is impossible to predict, but I would love any advice anyone has to offer! My husband will be finishing graduate school at Georgia Tech. We were leaning towards Roswell, but would consider almost anywhere within reasonable distance from downtown. Right now my son is in an ASD preschool class, full day, in a typical elementary school. He spends about 2 hours a day in a typical preschool class with an aide. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and input, positive or negative, about districts and schools. Feel free to email me off list if you prefer at jenniferadegroot@.... Thank you! My son is in Kindergaten and it has been a great year. Pre-K was equally great! Best of luck to you! Guest guest
My son is also 5 with ASD and is going into Kindergarten. A bit worried for his anxiety I looked into many areas and heard from many Therapists to take him to Cherokee County schools. I took him in for his eval to set up and IEP and I absolutely fell in love with their patience and their acceptance. They asked me questions about what I would like to see happen with his schooling and how could they help to make him feel comfortable. I was amazed at how much they did for him. He gets sensory breaks, will not be in a class of more than 10 kids, and will have one on one tutoring because he doesn't have the ability to sit still and learn when there are going to be other kids around. They set up a thing with blocks where he answers each question and gets to put a block away until all ten questions are answered then he gets a break for a couple minutes. They were great and my son didn't want to leave. I highly recommend Cherokee County school system. FillionTo: "autism-georgia " <autism-georgia >; "cmrosh@..." Guest guest
He would be attending Ball Ground, he was evaluated but the school board of Cherokee County. He will now be attending Pickens County schools for at least 2 years until I can find the perfect house to buy around Canton area. They say though that Ball Ground has great IEP programs and also there is a school in Woodstock or Acworth for Children with autism. Forgot about that, that is also something to think about. Guest guest
we're in west cobb / smyrna and have had a great experience with Brown Elementary. it's a very small school with an incredibly warm / welcoming atmosphere. our daughter is in a multi age autism classroom. Last year was her K year and she went into the typical classroom for 3 segments per day. There are 6 kids in the class and three teachers. they get discrete trial training in the classroom daily and every IEP we've had there has been wonderful. Things we went in preparting to ask / fight for, they recommended up front without us even bringing them up - it was good to feel we were all on the same page. Also, the SLP is very, very good (pretty good compliment since i'm also an SLP!). Aside from schools though, Roswell is probably a good choice. when we were looking for private therapists (ST and OT) the majority of clinics specializing treatment of kids w/ ASD seemed to be in Roswell. we have found a very good clinic in Smyrna and we're happy / established here. Good luck!! Guest guest
Hi , Do you have on his IEP that your son won't be in a class of more than 10 kids, and will have one on one tutoring? I love it! My son can't be in a class with too many students. That is the reason I took him from Cobb public school. He is in small group private school 4 students. Cobb small group can have too many special need in one room and they call that small group. Thanks!! A.Simon, "I know God promises not to give me more than I can handle. I have a 5-year-old son who has special needs (autism, global apraxia) and who needs a lot of support. I would like to pick where to live based on where he would get the best services/kindergart en experience, which is impossible to predict, but I would love any advice anyone has to offer! Feel free to email me off list if you prefer at jenniferadegroot@ yahoo.com.Thank you!
