Guest guest
Hi Ms. Carr, I would first like to say my heart goes out to you! I was the same age you are now when I found out my son's multiple diagnoses, in school and a single parent as well. My son is now seven and I am still not gainfully employed. The best advice I can give you is to continue to apply for jobs, but do not mention to employers that you have a special needs child. This sounds harsh, but I really feel that being candid (honest) about my child has locked me out of career opportunities. I understand employers need employees to be productive; however, that's hard to do when you have to go to therapy, doctors appointments, school meetings and care for your child when they are sick and out of school. I really don't know what to say other than; you have to really look for jobs that will allow flexibility. The only careers that allow that are those in the cleaning industry and even now they are looking for people that can be loyal to the company. Make sure you apply for SSI and try to get family support as much as possible. Our journey caring for our special little ones is long and hard, but with faith you can make it through. I'm not sure where you are located, but most of my son's doctors and therapist are on the north side of town. Also it may be less stressful to seek part-time employment as well. You have to take baby steps, refocus your mind to doing what you can and not try to do it all. I tried it and almost burned myself out. KIT Sincerely, Tara Contact Information Email: johnson_t06@... She was just diagnosed with Autism and not sure if whether or not she has mitochondrial disorder is still being confirmed. I have been worked in 4yrs because I have been taking care of my daughter, but now that I have finished school im ready to start my career. My question is how do I balance out starting my career and taking care of my daughter because I do have to work at some time in my life im just 26. Also are there any agencies that can come into the home? She is already going to a school where medicaid pays and I was told that I had to choose between the school and nurses coming out to the home. However, with trying to find a job I need all the help I can get.
Guest guest
Thank you so much Tara for the advice. I wish that I could find something in the field of criminal justice that I can do at home, but I know that will be hard to find. I have considered a job outside of criminal justice that will offer flexibility or even part-time. I continue to pray that God leads me because sometimes I do get stressed, but as of right now i am continuing to take my daughter to her appointments until God open up the doors for me. She is already receiving SSI too.Sincerely, Yolanda Carr Subject: SupportTo: autism-georgia Date: Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 7:51 AM I am a single-mother with a 3yr old child that is special needs. I have SSI( It is base on income so it can change when you start working or change jobs). Also do you have a waiver? If not Focus has a upcoming workshops with Heidi at Oct.7, 10am to 1pm Now / Comp waiver must register. This is Focus information: http://www.focus-ga.org Focus also have respita for families. My son has the Comp Waiver and I don't know how I would be able to take care off him without. He is a teenager now so I need support just like a parent of a little kid would. The comp waiver is very helpful to us. Good Luck A.Simon, "I know God promises not to give me more than I can handle. Guest guest
You don't have to have SSI - just be eligible for Medicaid. You also have to qualify as having a developmental disability.

I didn't want to eat it after reading that......it's so wonderful to get support from others during this journey. He was able to point out something I already knew but the information was buried under the panic I felt finding out that there was pizza coming for lunch. > Nice! So does that mean you no longer want pizza at ALL? Eldred
