Dancing at Home Depot to make wishes come true

Local residents taking part in flash mob dance on Saturday to raise awareness

about Make-a-Wish Foundation

(PETERBOROUGH) Imagine a child's biggest wish can't come true because they have

a life-threatening illness.

Now imagine raising awareness for an organization dedicated to making those

wishes a reality. All you have to do is dance in the parking lot of Home Depot

for one song.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first wish the Make-A-Wish

Foundation ever granted. In light of this and to stress the importance of

donating to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, borough's Elyse Bruce has organized

a flash mob dance.

A flash mob dance is when a large group of people come together in a public

place, dance for a brief time, then scatter and get on with the day.

" If everybody comes together for even just a few minutes, huge things can

happen, " Ms Bruce says.

Through partnerships, sponsorships and donations, the Make-A-Wish Foundation

grants wishes of children whose illnesses greatly impact their quality of life.

" People don't have to give tons and tons of money to feel good about helping

other kids, " she says.

She notes they can donate their time, service, products or money and every

little bit counts because it goes towards " making a huge thing happen. "

Every minute a child doesn't have their wish granted, she adds, is a moment

stolen from them that can never be regained.

" What happens if they never have that wish? That would be so sad, " Ms Bruce

says.

" Time is precious, so when people give three and a half minutes of their time to

come out and dance, that's some of the best three and a half minutes they'll

ever spend in their entire lifetime, in my opinion, because it's meant to help

someone else. "

The dance is on Saturday (May 29) at 1 p.m. and is one piece of a larger

" Dreamtime " fundraiser. The other components include a CD of the same name with

music composed and performed by Ms Bruce and a bigger dance performance by nine

Southern Ontario dance schools set for Oct. 23.

Ms Bruce says the flash mob dance steps are simple enough that anyone can do

them and they've also been recorded on DVD for easy learning.
