Guest guest
Read today that optimum watering is about 7/10ths of a gallon of water per square foot. Needless to say that is a lot of water over a yard, and because of the severe drought here we will be under water rationing starting Monday. So...I got two of my big buckets. They weren't labelled for capacity, so a little measuring and math to compute volume (a cubic foot is surprisingly large) I found the buckets to be 5 gallons. Moved the hose to a central location and stuck the end in one bucket then turned it on. Once that one filled, I moved the hose to the next bucket and went to pour about 1/5th of the bucket on each of the azaleas. By the time the bucket was empty and I got back, the next one would be ready. It took about 10 minutes to water all the important things. The grass and once-blooming flowers will have to wait for rain. Some of the other bushes are well established and didn't get quite so much water. Doing it this way was actually faster than using the hand sprayer as well as more precise in terms of getting the water where it was needed and how much. The broad area sprinkler didn't seem to accomplish much the other day and with the water shortage I won't be using it for some time.
