US President Barack Obama has addressed American troops serving in Afghanistan

during his first visit to the country.

He said the war " was not an act of America wanting to expand its influence " , but

instead was an attempt to prevent al Qaeda from operating " with impunity " .

He said that if " this region slides backwards... the world will be significantly

less secure " .
