What is sciatica????? Pam

hi everyone!

I've lurked a bit and decided to post tonight after a horrifying

episode at the Dr. office (that ended up in the emergency room with a

caring doctor, thankfully)...has anyone else here been diagnosed with

sciatica?

Aside from the horrid pain that can only be relieved with proper

opiods(!) I'm hoping that swimming will do something for this. Anyone

here who has had this problem, please let me know what you did about

it or how you felt using swimming to strengthen your body. Thanks.

Pam,

Here's the definition from:

<http://www.spine-health.com/topics/cd/d_sciatica/sc01.html> Sciatica—pain

along the large sciatic nerve that runs from the lower back down through

the buttocks and along the back of each leg – is a relatively common form

of back pain.

Sciatica is usually caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve from a

herniated disc (also referred to as a bulging disc, ruptured disc or

pinched nerve). The problem is often diagnosed as a " radiculopathy " ,

meaning that a disc has protruded from its normal position in the vertebral

column and is putting pressure on the radicular nerve (nerve root).

I hope you're not feeling a stigma over the use of opioids. The use of

these medications is often the only thing that allows many of us to return

to some form of normal life and relationship.

As for swimming, when I've been able to work out in a heated pool it's been

wonderful! Finding a heated pool is not an easy task, though, at least not

in this area. I was using the pool at a local college for a while, and they

were keeping it at the recommended temperature for arthritis patients. When

the swim teams start getting ready for their season, the water temp is

dropped to the low- to mid 70s. The YMCA was the same way. If you can do

it, it is one of the best forms of exercise.

Hi Sandig!

I have low back and leg pain- have tried swimming but

unfortunately for me, since I have also got neck and mid back

problems, I end up in more pain later especially if I try to do laps

but even if I just tread water. I do it anyway because I don't think

it's hurting anything.

It's the most highly recommended exercise because it reduces the

effects of gravity on the joints. Can they send you to physical

therapy? I was never sent to aqua therapy but I know most places have

it. It is best if the water is warm, the Y here has a 98 degree pool.

Cold water makes me cringe and cramp up (like my bathwater last night

argh) I'm enrolling soon for instruction in exercises that I can do

all the time in the pool. The warm water itself is a temporary balm,

I like to sit in a hot bath and one day after i win the lotto I'll

get a whirlpool tub.

I read a study recently that says strengthening the muscles has no

effect on relieving back pain, esp. for certain conditions, but I

think it's highly recommended because if you can strengthen the

muscles at all perhaps you can prevent further things from going

wrong! i.e. my lower back I have a vertebra slipped forward slightly-

it's only in there with ligaments and muscles holding it in place so

if I can do certain excercises maybe I can 'keep' it from moving out

further. It happened from the force of landing on my back on ice and

so far nothing has helped it but I figure it can't hurt.

I find floor exercises (groin tilts) are the best exercises for me. I

don't even do them on the floor- I have a Physical Therapy Ball which

is a large inflatable ball and I love it. I can do a semi sit up on

there, which I can no longer do on the floor- the ball is more

forgiving! Without medicine I'd not be able to do any of it.

Is your clinical trial through the Merck Drug Company??

That is the clinical trial that I am in. They are using the pro-tease inhibitors. Glad you got in. Be prepared to jump through some hoops. Blood test, questions and so forth.

Hi Janet ! im not sure and who is doing the clinical trial. They just told me I had to come in at 3 pm on monday and go through some things with me. What do you mean about jumping through some hoops? do you have to travel a lot? I had gone to my doctor and we had gone over the cost of treatment and even with my insurance I couldnt afford it so he decided to get me into this clinical trial and they will pay me for traveling and whatever do you know how much and how that works?

I have been in a clinical trial (Vertex) with protease inhibitor . . . finished treatment in late Jan. and my last blood test in early August showed that I was undetectable. I have 2 more follow-up visits. There is a lot of paper work and lab work, but I always felt I was being carefully monitored. I think it's a great opportunity for you!Leigh I just got called on a study and i really dont know what to expect .. has anyone done treatment with the protease inhibtor ? im kinda nervous and excited all at the same time ---------- Sent from my Verizon Wireless mobile phone

What I meant about jumping through hoops is that you have to go to the doctors office once a week for the first 8 weeks, let them know how you feel, keep a treatment diary, what time you take the pills, what you are eating and so forth.

They take blood every visit so that they can see how the treatment is working on a weekly basis. They do pay you for your time and effort. I think that If I keep every single appt, at the end of the clinical trial I will get a check for like 1800 hundred US Dollars.
