I love the web forums I'm involved in: the threads are visibly organized so you can tell who's replying to whom and which threads you have read and which ones you haven't along with which threads you have posted to and which you haven't, the software allows html text and graphics AND attachments, it is possible to rearrange threads and make permanent archives of key threads . . . you can really cross-post all that with an email-based list? If we can have them seamlessly synchronized, we should head for that ASAP. This is going to mean separating from eventually, I assume. Or could we have a system where the group e-mails are automatically posted to the forum and forum posts are automatically sent to the group e-mail address? I suspect that for forum organization purposes this wouldn't work very well.

It would require that EVERYONE who posted had an account at the website with the same email address as their subscription; otherwise all the email would come from one account. I think I have the technology to do that automatically (ie, give everyone who writes to the group an account automatically so they don't have to set one up themselves) and of course I can experiment any time since it doesn't disrupt the group. Last time I tried it didn't work that well but my Drupal chops weren't as good then. (Drupal is the software I use. It's a mighty and awesome thing.) When I get a sec I'll give it a whirl--JUST AS AN EXPERIMENT. Not making decisions for anyone here!
