Grain Mill

I'm assuming that we will be going GF, I'm just waiting for the results.

I have a Whisper Mill grain mill. Will I have any use for it after going GF?

It can mill millet, sorghum, buckwheat, and rice, but are those things easier to

buy in flour form if we wouldn't be using them a whole lot? It can't grind

anything wet/oily like nuts.

I'm trying to decide if I should sell it (after I get my test results) or hang

onto it for occasional use.

That was my next question! LOL!

It says the interior is self-cleaning. If it gets clogged, you're supposed to

run some popping corn through it. I wonder if it that would clean all of the

wheat out? Maybe I could grind something and send it to Heidi to see if she

reacts. :-P

" If you've ground wheat with it, Steph, you're going to bump into a cross

contamination issue. :( If it isn't possible to dismantle it and clean it,

then I'd sell it and replace it. Probably not the answer you wanted, eh?

Cruel!!!!

That is a good point ... cleaning stone grinding surfaces is next to impossible.

High heat would work, or a long sourdough soak <G>.

My grinder is metal and comes apart completely,

I don't know how whisper mills are constructed.

However my grinder didn't work very well either ...

I think stone wheels work better.

The Arrowhead Mills folks do process wheat and corn

in the same place and they donate the first 10 batches of

corn to charity and only then sell to the public, and they

do ELISA testing before they sell it. I don't recall if the

grinders are the same though. Bob's Red Mill has

two different facilities for grinding ... corn and wheat

are done in one facility. I didn't know that, and ate

their corn and was convinced I was allergic to corn too!

The GF community is attached at the brain, doncha know? ;)

My K-tech is self-cleaning, too, but I can look into the teeth and see a

certain amount of caked flour on the mechanisms that never really goes away.

Unless you are able to dismantle the mill and completely scrub it, then it

would be beyond my comfort level of salvagability. But understand that I

take x-contam very seriously. YMMV. :)

Maybe I could grind something and send it to Heidi to see if she reacts.

  • 4 years later...

The last time I looked. I was told that only the indians make there own

tortillas.I have a running search in e-bay but all I have found is artifact's

the only real one I have found is in the gourmet sleuth for $400. I was told

that country living is working on a set of plates to make peanut butter.. I

might try to grind nixtamal with that.
