Just because they called him gay doesn't mean he was. To a bunch of straight teen guys, calling another one gay is a real insult intended to make the target look weak and dehumanize them.

The treatment he suffered was beyond brutal. The fact that it was tolerated should mean prison time for some of the staff at the school, and honestly speaking, for some of the kids as well.
