Obama's aunt fights to stay in U.S.

04/02/2010 6:41:56 AM

CBC News

U.S. President Barack Obama's Kenyan aunt goes before an immigration judge in

Boston on Thursday in an effort to remain in the United States, her second

attempt.

Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of Obama's father, moved to the United States

in 2000 from Kenya.

Her first request for asylum was rejected and she was ordered deported in 2004.

But she did not leave the country and continued to live in public housing in

Boston until her immigration status was revealed just days before Obama was

elected president.

Obama said he did not know his aunt was living in the country illegally and the

laws covering the case should be followed.

A judge agreed to reopen Onyango's case, allowing her to restate her reasons for

asylum to the U.S. Immigration Court.
