1 month checkup

I went to doctor this morning for 1 month checkup.   My platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells dropped very low.  He is most concerned about platelets.  The platelets were 202 a month ago and have dropped to 87.   He reduced my Pegasys from 180 to 135 1x a week and Ribivirin from 800 to 600 a day.  Red blood cell count from 3.96 to 3.17 and white blood cell 4.8 to 1.9.

Why is he so concerned over the platelets?  He said that he has never had anyone drop this fast in a month.  He called the company and they told him to reduce the medications.

I am not sure how to look at this.   Do I need to be concerned about this?    I told him I am so committed to completing treatment.  I am.  I do look at this as a setback, but I am too ignorant of the significance of the platelets.  I guess I need to research what platelets do.

I have to do weekly blood tests now because of this.  -- Deborah

Your doctor should have you on procrit and neupogen by now to help increase those numbers . With low wbc's you are at risk for respiratory problems , and low platelets mean less oxygen in your blood . Lowering your meds won't help but treating the low platelets and wbc's will make a big difference .

Thank you for your response.  That is what I thought too.   I have to ask something.  I know I am on weight based dosage.  I weigh 155 pounds and flutuate between 150 and 155.  He had me on 180mg Pegasys and 800mg of Copegus.   He is reducing it to 135mg Pegasys and 600mg of Copegus.   Is the new dosage enough for my weight?

I wish I knew what the dosages were based on weight.

So you are not on any ribaviron ? Because if your not then I have no idea if that dose is correct dfor your weight . You would have to look up product infornation for each of these drugs and find out what thee dose per kilogram of body weight is . A kilo = 2.2 lbs. If I can find get a few minutes in a bit I will look it up for you post the results .

I am on Copegus (Ribiviron). Dr. had me on 800mg a day and reduced it to 600mg a day.   The Pegasys was reduced from 180 to 135.  I hope it is enough.

Deborah,After needing 2 blood transfusions in the first 4 months of treatment, my doctor put me on pro-crit and it really worked. My blood counts stayed up for as long as I was on it... I had to stop taking it because the insurance company stopped paying for it but it worked like magic when I was on it. Hope that helps.Teri To: Hepatitis_C_Central Sent: Sun, April 11, 2010 7:27:27 AMSubject: Re: 1 month checkup
