India's swine flu toll touches 1,108, over 28,000 affected

Eight swine flu deaths were reported in India Thursday, taking the toll to

1,108, Indian health authorities said here.

Also, 62 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of

people affected with the contagious virus to 28,047.

While three deaths were reported in Gujarat, taking the total number to 170, two

deaths occurred in Rajasthan where the toll has now jumped to 170, authorities

said here.

One death each was recorded in Maharashtra, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

The toll in Maharashtra, which records the highest number of causalities in the

country, touched 297.

About 37 people have died due to the virus in Punjab, while 17 people have

succumbed to the deadly virus in Madhya Pradesh.

In the national capital, five new cases were reported Thursday, taking the total

number to 9,580 - the highest in the country.

'There were five new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) reported today, of which two

were children. This has increased the total number of cases to 9,580,' Anjana

Prakash, assistant nodal officer for swine flu in Delhi, told IANS.

The total number of children affected by swine flu till now is 5,334.

A man died of swine flu in the capital Wednesday taking to 88 the toll in the

city due to the pandemic virus. There were no new deaths reported Thursday.

Also, new cases were reported from Karnataka (17), Maharashtra (16) Gujarat

(12), Rajasthan (7), Uttar Pradesh (3) and Punjab (1).
