Canker sores seem to be related to gluten intolerance. I'm not sure what the trigger is when you are eating gluten all the time (Crest toothpaste was it in our family) but since we went GF they disappeared. Gargling with Listerine gets rid of them faster. But at any rate, they are listed as a main symptom of " Celiac sprue " ... the word " sprue " is the Dutch word for mouth sore. Quite probably they occur for other IgA allergies (casein, eggs, soy, corn, yeast) but I haven't had experience with that ... for our family, ingesting wheat or malt reliably results in canker sores. If you have that kind of allergy, it really assults your immune system too, making herpes simplex and all the other viruses more of a problem. >And what about herpes complex (genital version)? I don't have it, but >I wonder if there might be a cure for people who do with the right >diet, etc. We are told that so many things are incurable, etc. but the >more I learn, the more I know that isn't neccessarily true. There are drugs that keep it in check ... probably anything that helps the immune system would help (like coconut oil, getting enough sleep, avoiding foods you react to). The breakouts tend to occur when the person is " under stress " so you want to be as healthy as possible. Heidi Jean

I have been avoiding wheat for quite a while, and gluten for more than a month, save one small piece of someone's home made kamut sourdough bread last week. It would be great if this would help. I can't remember the last time I had a canker, but it was within the last few months. They used to be more common for me. I have also been avoiding corn for a few months, and I don't have soy any more, and I don't have yeast either. Does Crest contain gluten? Which toothpastes are okay? Guest guest
I had canker sores in my mouth off and on my whole life until I gave up wheat a year or so ago. I had no idea that I was even allergic to wheat, but when I went wheat free for a month, all sorts of symptoms went away: canker sores, acne, digestive problems, mood swings, etc... And now, if I accidentally ingest wheat, I get a canker sore within a few hours. I've never been tested for celiac or anything though.... Giving up wheat was pretty tough, but now that I've found how much you can do with almond flour, it's not so bad. And I did find that I can occasional pieces of long fermented sourdough without causing my symptoms, but I think if I had too much, it could be an issue. And that is bread made with whole wheat! Anyway, just my experience.... Becky > > > Canker sores seem to be related to gluten intolerance. No one ever told me canker sores were related to diet (they always say " no one knows what causes them " , but there is really plenty written about them!). >Does Crest contain gluten? Which toothpastes are okay? I don't think Crest contains gluten ... actually I haven't heard of a toothpaste that does. So why did it trigger the sores? I don't know. Nothing triggers them anymore for me now, on a GF diet, but Crest and going to the dentist used to. It might be something like what happens with dermatitis herpitiformis ... DH is caused by IgA deposits under the skin. The deposits remain for MONTHS after going GF. If the person ingests iodine (like, table salt) it causes DH blisters to erupt, even though there is no gluten in the meal. Really confusing! IgA antigliadin antibodies are really very nasty ... they attack various tissues in the body, it's not good stuff to have around, and they seem to be implicated in a lot of different conditions. > Heidi Jean
Guest guest
I have no idea what canker sores are so can't comment... however, I do have herpes complex and simplex. I have investigated them quite a bit, and there is no cure - once you've got the virus, you've got it for life. The medications are just for suppression - not really the right way to treat it. Personally, I have found poor sleep to be a key trigger, and stress as well. I also suspect there may be a link with dairy. It also mostly comes up around TOM, and is doubly bad if I also happen to have a cold at the same time, which is pretty common. I have endometriosis, which weakens my immune system. Since I started to get that under control, the outbreaks are far less common. So, there are natural ways to treat it, and I believe they are linked to building a healthy immune system. But you have to keep trying, or it will come back. JO ___________________________________________________________ALL-NEW Messenger - all new features - even more fun! http://uk.messenger. Guest guest
> I have no idea what canker sores are so can't > comment... I just Googled, and this site has some information (note the possible link between sodium lauryl sulfate and cankers) http://www.animated-teeth.com/canker_sores/t1_canker_sores.htm The information I have read about herpes simplex and complex says that a person is not contagious unless they are having a break out. Is this true? I'm starting to wonder. Also, as the sores are starting to erupt, a person could simply not be aware of it - they could mistake the sensation for something else, or not feel it at all, so they wouldn't know if they were having a break out and could therefore pass it on to someone else without knowing it. They are known in the UK as mouth ulcers. Eating citrus fruits causes them in me. Now I low carb, I rarely get them at all. > The information I have read about herpes simplex and > complex says that > a person is not contagious unless they are having a > break out. Is this > true? Yes - viral shedding can occur before physical symptoms appear. However, once you've had herpes for a while, you get to notice the signs so can identify when it's on its way even without the sores appearing. Sometimes, I get the shedding, but no sores, which I take as a good sign that my immune system finally took notice!
