Ahhh the million dollar question...citrate vs carbonate calcium.

Off the top of my head and trying to keep it short.

You need stomach acid to absorb calcium carbonate. Which we have

(but RNYer don't...thus in the wls community you hear carbonate

being bashed)...We do have stomach acids,But usually less than

before. Taking calcium carbonate when we eat and our stomach acids

are at their highest help with the absorption of carbonate.

Citrate doesn't need the stomach acid. It's less picky.

I personally choose to take Citrate...but I take additional calcium

as carbonate. I like the idea of " mixing it up " . This is just a

personal off the wall opinion. I think our bodies respond better to

variety. Sort of like...Oh that's new, I'll try to absorb some of

that...lol.

By far...the best, most effective, calcium is the one you actually

will TAKE on a regular basis. I throw this in as a caution...if you

have RNY friends I would encourage them to take Citrate because

their stomachs do not function like ours do anymore.

Loved the site, lots of good info on getting calcium from food

sources. However, I just wanted to Parrot what Dee has said several

times at support meetings. We can no longer get in enough calcium

from food sources ALONE after the DS. SO DON'T TRY! You MUST take

supplements.

Sue,

If you google calcium supplements, you'll find many sites with

studies. I found a couple of them that indicated citrate to be

about 7% more bioavailable/absorbed than carbonate. However,

several sites said there was no difference. I've been taking a

powdered form of calcium citrate since surgery (since I hate horse

pills) and my calcium and PTH levels are good. I think the main

thing is to be consistent and diligent, watch any trends of lab

work, and tweak your intake when necessary.

Hi Sue,

I heard Dr. K say in a meeting once that the best kind of calcium to

take is whatever kind you WILL take. In other words, as long as you

take it regularly and enough, he's happy with whatever you take.

lol...ok, I let it go the first time but you baited me one too many

times. Chocolate also has Caffeine, which with your low Iron and

Calcium you need to limit. Not to mention the little fact that it

contains butt/gut growing sugar.

Did I raise to the occasion? rotflmao, while drinking my Taco Bell

Caffiene/sugar loaded butt/gut growing Pepsi. And my pepsi doesn't

even have the benefit of a drop of calcium...hummm, should I get a

Snickers to go with it???
