Guest guest
Does anyone have any recommendations as to a place on line to order milking supplies at a good price? I need a CMT, Strainer and thermometer. ~ a ~www.farmgirlhaven.comwww.homesteadblogger.com/MyFarmgirlHaven/http://my.tupperware.com/ROBERTA67

Guest guest
I think you left out a couple of things. You will need a dip cup for use after you milk. I like the one I got from Hamby because the used liquid does not go back into the cup. You will need filter paper to strain your milk. I buy it in a long roll and cut to size. It is much cheaper this way and less waste. I would also use a premilking wipe to sanitize the teat after you wash them before milking. I think you do need a strip cup. Premilking you will need it to tell you that the milk coming from that half is in good shape. I have prestreaped and found blood in milk and also signs of illness. The first milk coming down the teat is the most likely to have bacteria in it so you flush the teat. At the end if you are hand milking you will not need it. Good Luck Chris Our first doe kidded earlier this week. My six year old son got to witness the birth. Next question he asks me is when do we get milk? :-)We are looking at buying our supplies from Hoeggers. We are located in Canada, so if anyone knows of a place locally that would also be appreciated. What I want to know is what is everyones favorite items or must haves. We are looking to buy the following:Goat Milk pail (seamless, without rolled edge)3 gal totesmall filterstrip cup (are these necessary or just one more item to clean?)TishaKalyna Caprine

Guest guest
I bring a bowl of warm soapy water and a clean rag out with me. I use these to wash the udder, then I do use a strip cup, it's easy to wash. I milk into a stainless steel bowl or an enameled bucket, both are probably from Goodwill. I bring the milk inside right away and filter it into canning jars with dairy filters. So altogether I bought dairy filters and a stip cup new. If you are milking one doe, you really don't need a dairy tote. Have fun! - Heidi in So. Or. > > Our first doe kidded earlier this week. My six year old son got to > witness the birth. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for a lot of very helpful advice. I forgot to say in my original post, that we will be milking more than one doe. We have 20 that are due to kid soon. Not sure how many we will be milking, but quite a few for sure. My kids (two legged) drink about a gallon a day, plus we want to make cheese, yogurt, ice cream etc. Hence why we would like to have a tote. Our barn is also not real close to the house. Further than I would like to be making multiple trips. We would like to hand milk as we are not big on machinery. Guest guest
This is just my opinion from my own experience. I have found that I have the supplies I need in my home already- at a fraction of the cost of " milking supplies " The milk pail I use is simply a stainless steel pot- even has a cover and I bought a set of 3 all different sizes from 6 quarts up for less than $30 My filter is a coffee filter- stainless steel screen type, and when I started out and really wanted a long look at the milk I used an enamel camping type cup as a strip cup- I don't do that anymore- Grampy never did and I have never had a problem, For the cleaning I buy a gallon of solution and with a clean 'barn' washcloth I wash the utters and dry with a clean towel both before and after.I no longer use these items for anything else but the barn. It sure did save me alot of money and time. Congratulations and Happy milking, Lucinda > > Our first doe kidded earlier this week. My six year old son got to > witness the birth. Guest guest
Hi Tisha, I bought the Hoegger SS seamless goat milking pail in 1971, still in use and I love it. It came with a half-moon lid which I never have used. I also bought a Hoegger's tote in 1975. It is around 20 quart, SS, seamless, when I was milking a lot of goats. I now use it for my cow milk as last year I had to drive from the barn down the road, and regular pails slosh. You should be able to find ss seamless pails for a reasonable price locally. I use a nine liter one for the cows, but they come in all sizes. Any feed store should sell the disposable milk filter discs. I also bought a 4 quart ss strainer from Hoeggers. It is beautiful! It may seem like a lot of money initially, but you will never be sorry when you have good equipment. I've somehow managed never to have had a strip cup! Dont buy anything aluminum...marion > >Reply-To: RawDairy >To: homedairygoats >Subject: Milking supplies >Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 09:11:25 -0600 > >Our first doe kidded earlier this week. Guest guest
-http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=1 & p=10025 & cat=2,33140 We got our milk pails at Lee Valley--great price, nice product. The strainer we got from Caprine supply, and the " strip bowl " is a stainless steel bowl from goodwill or st. vinnie's. We use biodegradable dish soap, a few drops, and a packet of small washcloths from Target for a few $ for ten--toss them out when they are thread bare, just wash them with Oxyclean or hydrogen peroxide bleach.
