Guest guest
I've had several " hutches " made with cattle panels and 2x4's. I can't load pics on this computer, but I'll try to describe: Rectangle, with 2x4's, 8 or 10 feet wide, length to match exact length of multiples of cattle panels. Mine have been either 13 or 26 feet long, so essentially ends up two connected rectangles. Cattle panels form the " hoop " part, fasten at the sides with fence staples. I use cable ties to fasten panels together. Hardest part is finding a tarp the right size. TSC has a heavy-duty 16x24. 10 feet wide, you'll bang your head if you're 5'7 " or more. 8 feet gives about 6' headroom. 13 foot hutch takes 3 panels (mine are 52 " ), 26 foot takes 6 panels. Wish I could explain better or show pictures. One person can do this, but much easier with two people. I'm using two of these right now. One is open-ended and has the feeders and not-due pregnant does. One is my kidding area/milk room. Some friends helped me build actual walls and I floored the milk room with pallets and OSB. 10 feet from my door. Love it. in TN Goat Housing > Anybody have any good ideas for a somewhat portable goat shelter? Guest guest
I really like the cattle panel idea and will probably go with it. Betsy, I tried twice to buy NEW porta huts. Both times we set up a delivery time and both times they didn't show. I've given up on that idea. If I could find some for $75 I'd probably change my mind tho. <G> Belinda
Guest guest
One year I had a doeling who insisted on jumping on top of one, and it was pretty narrow. Don't know how she managed to get up there, or why, but she eventually broke it down. None of the others ever have, but they will put their feet through them. This time they can't get to the outside. The fences lead into and out of the shelters. in TN RE: Re: Goat Housing If the sides of the panels don't approach parralel the wethers will climb on 'em and wear out the tarps. Can connect'em and make 'em as long as the budget/geography allows.

Guest guest
You can buy 20 X 30 ft heavy duty tarps at Lowes or Home Depot. Pretty big, not cheap, but will last a little longer. Make sure all the sharp places on your supporting structure has some kind of padding to keep the tarp from rubbing when the wind blows or the animals rub against it. If it's out of reach of the goats, you can pad with old feed bags tied in place. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice about the feed bags. I'm figuring on an electric fence to keep the darlings from jumping on the outside. The wind really does blow up here! Belinda > > You can buy 20 X 30 ft heavy duty tarps at Lowes or Home Depot. Pretty big, not cheap, but will last a little longer. Guest guest
Belinda, check out this site.www.4ncsu.edu/~jeturne4/meat%20goat% 20sheds.htm. If you can't get into this then let me know and I will send you the page. These are pretty neat because they will help to keep yor goats feet trimmed up too. We tried the huts beforew and they ruin them. This is what I will be putting on my pastures this spring. > > Goat Housing > > > > Anybody have any good ideas for a somewhat portable goat shelter? Guest guest
I've seen Theresa's hoop houses and they are great! The 16x24 heavy duty tarps fit 'almost' exactly, when there is a couple of feet on one end not covered- that can be 'ooched' a bit on both ends to be even. The big point about these babies is that she put those braces on the wooden frames at both ends to keep it from scooching around in a wind- these are good a sturdy houses and are easy to move- I've got to come up with a couple myself in a couples of months for hay storage until the new barn is built. We may do them so we can list them sideways and roll some big alfafa bales in- I take what I can get, when I can get them.... Betsy
