Another version of this incident said she was handing the gun to her brother and shot him point-blank in the stomach.

Something to remember is that guns do not "just go off." Obviously the action had been cycled so a round was in the chamber and ready to fire. The only way it could have fired was with a pull of the trigger or maybe slamming the gun very hard into something. The latter didn't happen so it had to be a pull of the trigger, accidental or otherwise.

They can claim all they want that no cover up has happened. However, given that the mother was on some police board and a senior officer ordered the case dropped and that the reports and all are gone screams otherwise. Sounds like the mother pulled strings to keep her daughter from being investigated and maybe punished. Now said daughter has probably killed three more people.

Also, I think tenure should be done away with anyway. This is indeed a great deal of politics involved in the selection process, and not just left vs. right, even though there is a tremendous amount of that. If a new professor is tenured, that puts strain on the college to pay them. That could put threat to the existing tenured professors. Competent new professors also generally don't get tenure, the good teachers. I've read that being awarded any kind of "good teacher" award is the kiss of death as far as getting tenure. If all professors lost tenure and had to justify their job every year just like people in civilian jobs must do, then quality would probably improve at colleges. Make them teach for a couple of years then take a year or two off, paid, to research and write. Maybe the college could also maintain a teaching staff and a research staff, putting an end to the publish or perish nonsense that currently exists.

Amy Bishop told investigators she was trying to learn how to use a shotgun that her father had purchased for protection in the home after a break-in. She said she did not know how to use the weapon and brought it downstairs to the kitchen for help unloading it.She said she was raising it when "someone said something to her and she turned and the gun went off" while her brother was walking across the kitchen, according to the report.
