Current US law is that one owns the mineral rights under your land. I've even been approached a couple of times by groups wanting to do various surveys, but they never panned out, which was not unexpected given the geology of the area. If they had found oil or gas or something, I would let them drill for it, with the proper contracts and all. This couple of families doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Surely they aren't using so much gas that it is going to harm the state, if it is the state the owns the resources and not the land owners. Besides that, the families bought the well fair and square and really could have been selling gas for years if they'd wanted to. Maybe its different under a more socialistic system.
