Good points!

I'm a Canadian who loved to travel by train!

Canada used to have an extensive coast to coast passenger Rail Service, which has been reduced a little at a time, at least in the western provinces. Ontario and Quebec still seem to have frequent train service between cities. (Ontario has the Go Transit, with trains and buses)

Via Rail (Canada's national passenger rail service) used to operate a daily train between Calgary and Edmonton, still running into the 1980's. The train It stopped at larger towns between those major cities, but was eventually phased out.

Canada also used to have frequent inter city bus service, even in sparsely populated Alberta. However, bus service is also being reduced a little at a time.

There is concern for those who live in isolated areas and rely on bus to get to a major center for medical, family etc; if bus service is eliminated;

Not every one who either doesn't drive or is without a vehicle is able to live in a city, nor do they want to, but as people age, we may need access to the services a larger centre offers. People who may have chosen to live in a particular community, and maybe retire there, when public transit was available, may now be faced with no way to get into a city.

(I live in a city by choice, because I choose not to drive, and I don't want to have to rely on others, including my husband, for me to get places; to me independance is not driving a vehicle, it is being able to walk or take the bus to most of the places I want to get to)

In Canada, they keep building more passenger rails services, including subways. In the US, they build roads which noone needs and which are expensive to maintain. If Americans cannot travel, I think they deserve what they get for voting numbskull politicians into office who fund road building instead of high speed rail service and inter-urban subways and rails. AdministratorPity we don't have a national rail service like Europe and China. Sure their systems aren't perfect, but they are better than ours.
